My husband had a partly feral cat before we got together. She was absolutely gorgeous, but hated everyone but my husband. Any girl he was with would get the crap beaten out of them and peed on. Cut to me spending three months laying on the floor letting her sniff me and slow blinking at her. She ended up loving me and would sit with me all the time. My husband said that is how he knew I was the one because I got through to the cat. That girl got me through a lot of things, she is gone now, but she taught me that even scared partly wild cats can eventually warm up to you if you treat them with kindness and respect.

I've been blinking like that at my cats for a while now and it definitely helps build a connection. They will still go psycho on you if you annoy them too much tho lol. But they aren't My Cat From Hell psychotic.

I've been using the slow eye blink and soft eye squint with Cats for years with my own Cats and other Cats that I meet at friends places. It works, trust me. :-)

I use this when I volunteer at my local cat shelter’s adoption center at PetSmart. Every week there are essentially new cats to adopt out. Using the slow blink and soft eyes, cats are much more easy to built trust with. I also don’t directly “face” them a lot of the time, I turn my body to the side and adopt a relaxed posture. It helps cats feel less “centered on” and hence, helps them relax.

I did the blink because I read somewhere that cats interpret direct eye contact as a challenge, and if they slow blink themselves, it means they're not feeling threatened. it worked really well with a spicy foster I had here, and she's blossoming in her new home now too

I have a new cat who has reached the supervised interaction stage with my other cat. There haven't been any physical aggression, but my first cat has gotten hissy. The new cat actually slow blinked at her until she calmed down and blinked back.
