Fracking for CLEAN energy?

preview_player

Hydraulic fracturing - "fracking" - has made it possible to get and burn much more oil and gas. And that has a cost that we’re more and more aware of. Now, engineers are using the technologies developed and perfected for fracking to get much more CLEAN energy out of the ground...

When I was in Iceland they explained to me thst they did this at this one site and it washed out a lot of nasty stuff (sulfur and some other things) out of the ground and actually made the area geologically unstable (sinking ground).
It is a nice concept but when dealing with things deep underground, you never know what might happens.

_"...fracking?..."_
"yes sir, that's it's name."
"can.. can we change it?"
"probably not, sir."

Most stuff can be used for both good and bad stuff, there's no definite line though but this is impressive

People will advocate for literally anything except nuclear smh

You know what’s already great: nuclear energy

When Oklahoma stopped fracking, their earthquakes diminished significantly. When they started fracking for purposes other than oil, the earthquakes increased.

I'm a geoscientist who spent a decade in oil & gas and now work in geothermal. There are big differences between fracking, pumping chemicals into metamorphic oil-bearing shale, and hydraulic fracking, pumping high-pressure water and sand into hot igneous rock and disposing any waste responsibly. We work tirelessly to dispel the confusion between the two methods due to the negative public perception of fracking.

Power production is nice, but that kind of geothermal could also be used to simply bulk offset power demand for heating in the winter, particularly in combination with heat pumps.

Technically also nuclear power based on uranium fission.

If only there was a magic rock that can boil water in larger quantities while being extremely more safe with almost no waste

Will definitely check out the long form. I'm interested to see how (if at all) they've addressed the geological issues with the technique i.e. the tendency to crack nearby buildings and cause small seismic events.

Wasn't NASA investigating this at one point to simultaneously bleed energy off of the Yellowstone caldera and provide clean energy?

My father built a house (had it built) that ran pipes underground. He then had water/heat transfer fluid pumped through the pipes. During the winter, the temperature at the level of the pipes, was greater than outside air temperatures, thereby using the temperature difference underground > ground level, as a heat source to heat his house. During the summer, the temperatures underground were lower, so the pipes underground were used as a heat sink,
It's called a geothermal heat pump

most like Fracking is pushing sand into a formation so it creates a low-pressure zone so the oil and gas and water and uranium and whatever can lech out of the rock so we can use it.

I hesitate to be too happy about this without knowing whose land they're doing this on

Fracking can also destroy water tables that we use for drinking

If this was Battlestar Galactica, fracking would mean something very different. 😎

Wow that's pretty interesting. You would think the russians would've came up with this during their whole project.

Fracking also increases the rate at which earthquakes happen and the severity of those quakes.

Yeah… we’ve had it in our hose for over 20 years. And we live in a place with low surface heat flow. It’s called geothermal heating, and you don’t need fracking for that.

This is just a way for the companies to promote fracking as a good thing.
