I followed a similar path. Although I was pre-approved with VU. I went with PenFed. Which turned out a full percentage point below VU. I will say VU is very efficient and can walk you through the process including setting up utilities. I did ask VU for a rate reduction which I was offered to buy points on top of the expensive fees. VU attempted to match after I shared my PenFed offer which was still.5 ahead. I think PenFed is good but they could benchmark VU's efficiency.

I went thru USAA, Veterans United, NASB, NBKC, Navy Federal, PenFed, local leaner who is realtor buddy, and others. PenFed was the easiest and lowest rates with no extra fees. NERD Wallet lied its ass off putting NASB & NBKC at the top. Their rates were no better than conventional loans.

I love veterans united. I'm in their lighthouse program to get my score up some. After a month. 45 points. I'm still working on it to get it better. So 6 months in my goal

Mortgage brokers who are VA specialist like Rally Point Mortgage will most likely have better rates/lower closing costs so make sure you do your due diligence and shop with them also. You will be SO glad you did.
