Nationals Leader vows to reinstate live exports if elected

The Nationals Leader David Littleproud has vowed to reinstate live exports if the Coalition is elected.

“The first act of parliament that I’ll bring in as the next agriculture minister is to appeal the phasing out of live sheep,” Mr Littleproud told Sky News Australia.

“The reality is this will have a perverse animal welfare outcome.”

Geez he's a fool. Tell him to stop quoting statistics unless he actually knows what they are. In 2022, 502, 758 sheep were exported (16, 435 of those by air), not 388, 000; and in 2023, 650, 717 were exported (18, 308 by air) not 580, 000. The salient point though, is that over 6 million sheep were exported live in 2002 and that number has diminished by more than 90% to 500, 000 in 2022 without decimating the sheep industry.

There was also no deal done with the Animal Justice Party involving live sheep exports for the 2022 election - Labor's decision to run with the live sheep phase-out policy again was made after negotiations for "preferences" (How to Vote card positioning )in some lower house seats and for Senate ballots in some states/territories was finalised.
