The horrors that this guy went through and he shook off the hatred and is still stuck with the memories. I knew a marine that survived the Batan death march. His hatred was with him til the day he died.

I was stationed in Okinawa, Japan from 1984 thru 1985. I fell in Love with the Okinawan people. They accepted me at their cultural events and had me participate in the festivities. My Grand Daughter says she is going to take my ashes and dump them over the seawal after I die as I talk about Okinawa and how much I loved it there and rhe people. I learned more about WWII from the people there than I ever learned in any history books or classes. The sunsets over the East China Sea were Awesome!

One thing I love about being a nurse is taking care of our Vets. I especially love it because of the stories they shared with me. I remember one Pt. He had jumped with the 101st. One of the first Mexican-Americans that went to WW2 from the Westcoast. He told me as his train was rounding towards the Eastcoast they made a stop in Texas on a very hot day. The store that was at the tracks had the infamous “Whites Only” sign. He looked at the boys and said, “Hey, I’m gonna grab a pop.” Of course, a few fellow soldiers were telling him he couldn’t but he rejected the nonsense and strolled right on in. He said he made eye contact with everyone in the store, grabbed a pop and some more for the boys, went to cashier who eyed him pretty good, looked at his military uniform, nodded and let him on his way with the bounty. Then he talked to me about his days in Italy and how he saw Mussolini body; I believe he also said he was only a few hours short upon his death. But my favorite of his story was how he bought a limousine from an Italian gangster, Joe Bananas.

If anything, take the time to talk with your elders and enjoy the stories they share. And I always find it an honor to take care of our Veterans like they took care of me. God Bless you all!

Wow. So much in these words. She probably helped this vet be okay after all was done. He remembers her with reverence.

I'm a 68 year old Nam vet.

This veteran, without any shame, makes me openly weep.

To the Greatest Generation

I thank you.

Each and every one.

Quietly spoken, my grandfather was like that - he fought at arnhem, lost his best mate & his left leg.... always quietly spoken, carried so much hurt to his grave.

When I was in Japan in the early 90s, I went to the 5 story museum in Nagasaki that is a tribute to those lost in August of 1945.
There were 2 elderly Mama-sans sitting outside, and I could feel their hate toward me.
When I came out, I was crying.
You could see their demeanor change instantly, and that got to me even more.
I had to sit down on the next bench and get myself together.
War is nothing more than old men talking and young men dying, and THAT is a tragedy.
Thank you to all fellow veterans and their families, because we all gave some.
I salute you, and especially the ones who gave all.
May God forgive us for our mistakes and bless us in the future.
