I've had surgery before (on my foot) and it is not a big deal, it did not even hurt because of a nerve block or pain medicine. It just felt fuzzy. The worse part is not eating before your surgery. I barely remember going into the operating room because of the Versed they gave me through my I.V. (which did not hurt that much being put in) After the 2.5 hour surgery I kept on waking up and falling back asleep. The only thing that hurt was my throat because it was sore from when they did the intubation to help me breathe during the surgery. For me it is an experience that is not that scary.
