Sony MiniDisk deck, model MDS-JE320, from 1998.

Paired tonight with my Pioneer SX-650, 1977, 35WPC.

So this is a format I knew very little about until recently. Now that it’s vintage, it’s catching my attention, and I’m not quite sure why I never jumped on the bandwagon years ago.

Back in the 1990s, there were very few affordable digital recording solutions until CDR came along for the PC. Especially sources that you can record records, tapes, or other sources, without having to go through a computer.

Sound quality is great, apparently there is some compression and loss, but I think it’s pretty superior based on the tests we’ve run. It’s magneto optical of some sort, similar to Iomega Zip drive storage technology for the computer.

Very easy to use and intuitive, you can erase, insert, delete, rename, and do all sorts of stuff to existing material. And when it plays there doesn’t seem to be any delay or gap in whatever you end up doing.

The only downside is, the mechanism is very flimsy and cheap, it doesn’t look like it’s built very well, but it is working, so maybe I should stop talking.
