Was I WRONG About Chrono Trigger?!

Fortunately, there's a very small list of JRPGs I've covered that I'd like to hit the "redo button" on. One of them is Chrono Trigger where I felt in my initial coverage that I skimmed over some of the core aspects of the game a bit too much as the channel was still finding its footing in what it wanted to be. So, today, I'd like to give Chrono Trigger a second run through and see how it fares in my return playthrough.

Chrono trigger is one of those games that everybody needs to play. It's a really special game.

And that artwork by Akira Toriyama is amazing.

Played it for the first time in 2020 and it’s my favorite game of all time now. Truly a timeless (no pun intended) game.

Beating this game earlier this year was one of my favorite moments in all my years of gaming. Truly a classic. Thanks for revisiting this, Matty!

Chrono trigger is one of my favorite rpgs ever. Such a great game with good style and some iconic tracks. I still have my complete DS copy also and it’s one of my favorite games I own

This is one reason why I love your channel bro. You're not trying to be a dick about things, but you're also not trying to ignore flaws about things. Yes, Chrono Trigger is an absolute masterpiece and by many accounts deserves the 10/10 reputation. But it does have small little 'flaws', because everyone is different at the end of the day. Its why it tends to be nitpicks rather than complete flaws. I 'm not going to sit here and pretend the game is perfect, but I sure as hell will recommend it to every single human being I can.

I remember growing up and never making the connection that chrono trigger was drawn by akira toriyama, I would just name all the characters DBZ names like Lucca Bulma, Magus Vegeta, Chrono Goku etc etc
But man, this game really swung me into RPGs, it’s so accessible and easy to pick up for people who were inexperienced like I was.
The tech moves are still so ahead of their time too, i wish they had more of that even in modern JRPGs

Played for the first time this year. Amazing game. The pace, battle and story is really what makes it great for me. Became one of my favorites.

I played Chrono Trigger for the first time back in 2012 during my last year of high school. I had somehow missed it despite growing up with the SNES and loving Square. Needless to say, the gameplay, story, and music absolutely ENTHRALLED me. To this day, it is still easily one of my, if not my, favorite games of all time.

Chrono Trigger is still my favorite game, and I played it when it first released. Still have that same cartridge and SNES; yes, they still work.
The DS release was beautiful, the extra gameplay they added was perfect. I replay it (either version) every few years and still feel the same joy I did when I was a kid.

Hello, really enjoyed your review. As someone who holds this game as their favorite game of all time, your criticisms are very accurate, and i agree with you 100 percent. I always dread going through the factory after getting robo, and try to finish it as fast as possible. The fact that you enjoy this game this much after only playing it for the first time says a lot about the quality of it. Keep up the good work.

I'm 46 and I first played this game way back in '95. Chrono Trigger is my favorite JRPG of all time. This game definitely needs to come to the Super Nes on the Nintendo Switch. Please make it happen Square Enix!!

I literally found a DS copy of Chrono Trigger for like 30 bucks off of ebay, and I just had to check it out. Besides Final Fantasy 7, this was considered one of the best JRPGs of all time, I have to playthrough it! Loved that you mentioned FF12 as well, absolutely adore that title, that middle section of the game, especially in the Sun Cryst Dungeon, some of my favorite consecutive boss fight moments in gaming for me

Chrono Trigger for the DS is my opinion best version to play. I first played it back in 98 and ever since then it is still to this day in my top 10 favorite games of all time. I love the unique features with how the characters collaborate together with different combo techs, this really encourages you to try different character groups. Of course, I have my favorite group to play with. My preference is Frog, Chrono, & Marle, or Frog, Marle, Ayla. Yea Frog, aka Glenn is my favorite character in the series.

For anyone who's interested, there's also a pretty good randomizer for Chrono Trigger. It's called Jets of Time and I'd definitely recommend it for any die hard fans looking to breath new life into an already timeless classic.

I always named Frog as Glenn, Robo as R-66Y, and Magus as Janus.

Did you know they had several different alternate endings you could get too?
It really adds to the characters/time eras in a whole and you get a whole lot of set pieces you otherwise couldn’t see

Great vid! Just FYI - The Steam version has improved over the years. All of the DS extras have been patched in (besides the second screen, of course), and it has a retro graphics option now.

I first played CT back in 1995. When I saved Lucca's mom, I was so happy and emotional, my little 13 year old self didn't know what to do so I just lied there staring at the ceiling with tears rolling down my eyes and my SNES controller in my hands. That feeling and memory is still ingrained in me and I hope my daughter plays it one day.
