I just did the same thing this afternoon. I feel like such an idiot. Helps to know that I'm not the only one. Thanks for posting this video.

I did it, too. Caught my mistake and called mechanics shops to see what I should do. I got a $4200.00 estimate from my 'regular' mechanic shop. [NO MORE will I be trusting them across the board!] I could NOT believe what they were telling me: that it didn't matter I'd only put a little in, that the truck had not been running nor started after the error, that the DEF crystallizes whatever diesel is in the tank, that I'd have to replace the fuel pump, etc. etc. etc. I researched it myself and discovered it DID matter that there'd only been a little in the tank and I WEIGHED the one I'd used as well as a NEW untouched one: BOTH weighed 22.6 lbs. In short: they LIED to me. I contacted my go-to backyard mechanic who said NO worries, we will pump the tank dry and flush it. WHY do people try to RIP OFF their best clients?

It happens. I did it yesterday. Drove it about 7 miles before I noticed it running rough. Had it towed immediately to a diesel specialist shop. They had it on a lift tearing it apart right away. Just got the call that everything was good to go. Pays to know a GREAT diesel mechanic. Donaldson Diesel Performance (Havana, FL).

In my own case, I naively added about 4 litres of DEF into my Mazda CX-5 diesel car, and drove it for about 150m before it shutdown. I simply pushed it to a mechanic shop that evening and first thing in the morning by 8am, I was at the shop.

They simply dropped and drain the fuel tank, filled it with a new 10 litre diesel. Use a vacuum to extract the contaminants in the fuel pipe, replace the fuel fitter, prime the injectors and added concentrated injector cleaner to the fuel tank and drove it for while.

I then top it up with 35 litres of premium active diesel and it it running just fine..

My story is near identical to yours (phone) except I did not leave it running this time. I put 1.2 gallons in and caught myself. I almost immediately dropped the fuel filter, called a tow truck to take my truck back home and then proceeded to fluch the tank out through the primer (ignition) button. It took hours but finally was only getting foam. Filled it back up and about 1, 000 miles later all seems fine

Good on you for sharing your mistake, awesome that the dealer mechanics did the job properly ie correcting the root cause then checking for damage. Way back when I was studying and had aspirations of being a mechanic my old school trade teacher taught us how the systems worked and how to diagnose issues. Now it seems the norm is to keep changing parts until it works.

Just happened with me today 🤦🏻‍♂️. I only put 1dl roughly in to my tank. The tank is full (53L). I have done 80km since no sign of any problem. I feel so bad. Maybe I am lucky and won’t cause any problem due very small amount !?

Same thing happened to me 2022 GMC 1500 the tow truck driver started the vehicle after being told many times not to, they dropped the tank and flushed the systems, that was May 2024, my truck just died. Truck was towed and I’m looking at $12-15k for the fuel system and they are cracking the engine to see if any corrosion or crystals, could be another $12-15k for engine

I did it in 2014 on my 2013 Ford F350. Same cause - distracted and not paying attention to what I was doing. It cost me $11, 800. My fuel system was grossly contaminated and it wouldn't run.

I just did this to my 2021 F-250 6.7. I didn’t realize it till I had started the truck. I sat for about two minutes writing down info on some estimates. 2mins and it shut down. Anyone know how Fords deal with this stupid mistake?

did the same thing last week. had exactly the same repair procedure done i have 400 miles on it now with no issues. would like to know if other people have done the same and how long they have been running since the repair and if they have had any long-term effects.

I just made the mistake of adding it as well but it was just a very tiny bit. There’s a stopper so the def sat there and I managed to use a straw to suck it out. But I’m afraid if some droplets passed through….Would this be serious??? I drove it a bit and everything seemed good

Did a similar thing with 1 liter. Started engine for a short while. Got it drained + changed fuel filter. We will see what happens next. Feel like an idiot. But luckily, I read that car insurance covers wrong fueling.

I don't call anyone who does it stupid. Life is busy and most of our life we've dumped stuff in the tanks for what ever. Just a habit embedded.
I have owned def 3 Ford F350's since 2011. 2011, 2016, 2019. Did it to 2 of them once. The 19 I did it twice. Both those times I was home and didn't start it. Dropped the tank and washed out everything there good. With the other 2 I only put in about 1/2 gallon or less and it wasn't running. I dumped in all kinds of Powerservice 911, Diesel Kleen. Drove a few miles then drained the filter. Repeated that for a while until the fuel was clean looking. Changed filters out. I put on 100k miles more at least on those 2. No problems..
I took the filters out and let them dry out. Cut them open. No sign of white crystals. I often wonder how long it takes for the system to break down and destroy the engine.

I put about a Quart of def in a tank that is full of diesel 50 gallons. Will it just require changing the filters.
