Apple MacBook Air M1 2020! Good For Music Production?

The MacBook Air M1 was released late November 2020 sporting Apples new Silicon. Is it good for music production? The answer is yes but it's complicated. Their company been fighting an issue of rehashing old tech each year with little improvement. Now we'll get to see if the cheapest (newest) MacBook Air can handle tuff task like streaming video with OBS, making beats, software compatibility & editing video (as I edited this video using Final Cut Pro X). Spoil Alert, it did very well & even exceeds the performance of the $6000 maxed out MacBook Pro Intel processors! Here is the best part. The MacBook Pro 14 & 16 will sport the newest ARM based processor too! So what am I saying? Well, I enjoy my new MB Air laptop but there's caveats. The biggest con is the screen size (and you can only plug up one additional monitor. That includes using a dongle). The other is the lack of I/O (only 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports but at least you get a headphone jack). It's kind of a fair trade off for portability reasons but you'll have more options later this year. How do you feel about this review? Please leave a comment below!

Bought the air M1 as a side laptop to my main PC setup (i7 9th gen, 32 gb ram) turn out it runs circles around my PC with albeton and everything else. latency is great (9ms total) even without an interface. I've now switched to mac after 20 years PC

I've bought a Macbook Air M1 (16 GB Ram model) last week for music production and I am EXCITED about the performance.
It has so much power that it runs complex songs with a latency of 128 samples (I guess it even could handle these projects with 64 samples lol) and never had any issue with dropouts, even with Izotope Ozone on the mastering bus.
But yes, some plugins still have issues, like Massive X, and the MPC Live Controller Mode is not supported yet. That said, compared to any computer and laptop I've ever owned the Macbook Air is a such a HUGE upgrade that I can't imagine to go back to my previous studio computer, even if the software I use is not compatible with the M1 processor (it runs with Rosetta2). At his point I even consider to replace any plugin or developer which has not any plans to update their software at least to the Big Sur OS.
It's amazing what a Laptop this size can handle!!

Cheers for this, I have been thinking about upgrading to an M1 Air - replacing my current MBP 2013 model - this clinches it for me. Chapeau!

I built a machine 7 years ago...still using it. No time for these new VSTs...or buying new computers every few years. My hardware Instruments do the heavy lifting. I run 10 years *minimum* on anything I build. But the spin is I don’t do this for a living...its just fun for me.

I love how when you think about it djs are just really cool nerds. You have to have some in depth knowledge to be a music producer. It's a good thing this Is a smart dude right here

Ave love your honest reviews brother always proper honest creditable and worth watching. A ting I find amazing with the new M1 entry level Air and Mini is they are the cheapest of the line so far and are scorching computers. You see a lot of reviews dissing doing video editing on it but like it's 1000 pound in the UK which is like silly money( cheap ) for a brand new computer. For a final thought never really been to much into Trap Music but loving the new change in style 👊🏾

Man to be honest. I had the 2019 MBP with 8gb Graphics and 2 TB Hard Drive and 32GB RAM, Core i9 2, 3....guess what...was about 3500€. I ordered the M1 Mac Mini (for 700€) and seeing the power of the M1 Chip I changed it to the MacBook Air M1 (about 1100-1200€) with 8gb Ram (because 16gb wasn't available at that time) and mannn...thats the best laptop i ever had in my life. Performance wise it was on par with the 2019 MBP (and in most use cases it crushed it) plus it has crazy battery life and fanless...come on man. I was editing my videos and stuff on the iPad Pro because it is also a beast of a machine but with the portability of the Macbook Air, the nice keys, the processor, battery life and fanless design....Apple got me with this machine. Waiting for the next M1X/M2 machine but this time maybe with 2GB of storage and 16gb Ram.

These look damn impressive, I may be tempted to get one and put 16gb ram in it, maybe keep the drive at 256 as I keep my libraries on separate drive, good stuff Ave
