I think you nailed it. Clone houses only have an inroad because designer houses are making mistakes. Lack of creativity, rising prices, and a decrease in quality if materials. If designers took more risks, kept costs to a reasonable rate, and kept the quality higher, clones wouldn't stand a chance.

One missing piece that I think is also key to the popularity: the lower cost feeds many in fragcomm’s shopping addiction. It’s a lot easier to buy $25-30 bottles and then convince yourself “it’s just as good, maybe better!” Then you keep that addiction wheel spinning.

Excellent commentary and perspective Gerard. For me, as a lower middle class guy, every dollar has mattered over the past few years and so I have turned to Middle Eastern brands (meb) to leverage purchasing power. I can purchase 3-4 meb for the price of 1 niche. The majority of people around me don't know or even care that what I'm wearing is 80% clone of a niche or major brand. Every now and then I'll purchase a high dollar cologne but for the most part inexpensive but quality brands have my attention and wallet at the moment.

I really think this type of video is so underappreciated. Definitely one of the better ones you've put out!

To me, designers aren't much better than clone houses. Brand "A" will come out with an extremely successful fragrance, and boom...every designer brand releases fragrances that have basically the same scent profile, with flankers following down the line. Clones have a place in my collection, as I won't pay to have a collection full of niche bottles. Most of the time, you can distinguish between the quality of clones and niche though. I thought I read a while back that some clone houses use very well-known perfumers to make their products without advertising them as the perfumer. Enjoyed the video!!

I think clones have a market, in this hobby.

At the end, collecting fragrances is a luxury thing, and people can smell great without breaking the bank.

I only have 3 clones in my collection, but I like them a lot:
Dark Door Intense (DHI), 05 Domino Essence (Rosendo Mateu No.5), and eternal oud (MFK Grand Soir).
I have the OGs DHI and RM5, and the clones are very close. Of course, as fragheads, we try to drill down notes, etc…. But everybody else, don’t care if you are wearing DHI or Dark Door Intense.

Great video. I’ve made the mistake thinking that if an expensive fragrance is cloned, it must mean I will like it. Not always true however it doesn’t hurt as much when it only costs 20-50$ vs 100- 350$.

Hey Gerard. I have been purchasing the middle eastern scents for about 4 or 5 years. For the most part, I have been very pleased with the ones I have. And, I will continue to buy in the future. Thanks for the video.

Designer houses do seem to be stagnating with their seemingly endless flankers. But as good as some of the Middle Eastern clones are getting I still only have 6 in my collection so far (out of 160+), and remain firmly—for now—with the western brands. One must also remember that some western brands are also producing their own luxury-inspired or clone fragrances too, and doing it well. Houses like Mont Blanc, Zara, and Reyane Tradition have some pretty good fragrances that are very close to the more expensive options that inspired them.

Interesting thing I’ve seen is that some of the Middle Eastern clones are so popular and so good that there are companies producing clones of clones! And some of the western brands like Armani and YSL for example are trying harder to penetrate the huge burgeoning Arabian market by releasing special limited editions or elixirs that are more appealing to it. It’s an interesting industry that’s for sure.

I think it's really simple. How many clones can you get compared to one Aventus? A lot.
People want to fit in somewhere. Fragrances and social media are accessible ways of doing that.
You can climb the social ladder with fragrances. Groups and forums are boundless now.
People are making a name for themselves and some are doing very well from it.
Arabic perfumes have found a sweet spot. Affordability is not the only reason, albeit it is the main one.
I still have a few Al Haramin samples from their Prestige line. I really liked Arabian Treasure.
Amazing soft patchouli with florals. Not too long ago I picked up a bottle of it. Not the same. Not even close.
Inexpensive vanilla. What a letdown. I had some Rasai's. I like the brand. I like the transparency of the company.
I picked these up in 2016, 2017, the same with the Al H. At that time, I was lucky enough to get a bottle of Ottoman Empire.
The brand is Areej le Dore. TBH, I would rather own Ottoman Empire than 30 of a bunch of other Arabic colognes.
Another two houses that I do like that are Arabic are Ajmal and ASAQ.
ASAQ is harder to find, but Ajmal is not. I will say that some of the Ajmal's are very very Arabic.
You might get that "Oh, no no no". from your wife.
Swiss Arabian can have some good oils for a decent price.
Have you tried the new metal cap Aventus? I might get a bottle.

Love this Gerard. Very insightful as always. I struggle to get on board with the budget Middle Eastern houses for one simple reason. Almost all their bottles are ugly and gaudy as hell. Now if they ever start pumping out product that I can look at happily on my shelf that also smells great. That’s another thing…

I like this style of video, cool stuff. I don't have any middle eastern clones in my collection, but I fully appreciate why people go that route. Great points about flankers and a lack of innovation in the designer market 🎯
