To be honest this is kind of inaccurate... Firstly, the government did try to achieve a negotiation (the Chief Minister, David Marshall stepped in) but that failed also the workers did not give a strike because of "poor working conditions" but more of they felt that the Hock Lee Agalamated Bus company was treating the workers from their own bus union (Hock Lee Bus Employee's Union) better than from the SBWU. Sure, the low pay and bad working conditions could be a part of the reason but the main reason was the unfair treatment between unions (for example, 100 SBWU workers took leave to attend a SBWU meeting and the company viewed this as mass resignation, and hired workers from their own union to replace them.)
