What's the Difference Between Major vs. Minor Prophets?

The prophets in the Bible have long been categorized as Major and Minor prophets. But contrary to what it sounds like, these classifications aren’t connected to the prophets’ messages, but rather the size of their book. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel have longer books, while Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi have shorter books. Regardless of the size of the books, each prophet’s message is valuable, important, and the word of God.
However you can classify the books based on the prophets’ messages, placing them in three categories. Pre-Exilic, warning before the exile; Exilic, encouragement during the exile; and Post-Exilic, encouragement and hope after the exile.
Knowing the time period of the book allows the prophet’s messages to come alive in a different way to the reader and goes beyond the classification of major and minor prophets.
