What is NFV Orchestration?
NFV orchestration & management are extremely important. It’s the platform that breathes life into the service. It starts by switching on and turning on individual components, bringing them to life, stitching them to create the entire service, and on an on-going basis adds service management capabilities, and provides elasticity and reliability functions to a service.
How important are NFV Orchestration and management for a successful NFV roll-out?
Typically an orchestration management platform provides lifecycle management functions such as creating a service, creating individual components, creating networks that tie components in the service, deleting the service, providing elasticity either scaling up or scaling down, monitoring services and sub-services within the network, doing service re-mediation, etc. These are all extremely important for a reliable NFV service and that is only possible through the NFV orchestration platform.
The other key function that it provides is a lot of abstractions, and abstraction is important because it provides the ability for the service to be easily managed. So there is an abstraction at the VM level – a lot of lifecycle management functions being done at the VM level, the same functions being done at the VNF level, and again at the Service level. All these three abstraction layers are important to be able to simplify service creation and service management functions.
This platform becomes central command and control station around which additional features that are really important can be developed. For example, monitoring capability and debugging capability in to service problems, as well as resource movement or mobility of resources across multiple distinct NFVI infrastructures and multiple clouds. So it’s the one platform that is extremely important and its importance can only grow with more and more applications as it evolves.
