The Old Guard 2020 Ending scene. Exiled Booker is visited by Quynh 'It's nice to finally meet you'
Показать описание
The ending also set up a potential villain in the sequel. Before the credits even roll, we get a big surprise when the exiled Booker is visited by Quynh (Van Veronica Ngo).
Centuries ago, the movie explains that Andy and Quynh were a dynamic duo until they were punished for being witches. The two were separated and while Andy finally got away, Quynh was less lucky. She was imprisoned in an iron maiden and thrown into the sea. Because she's immortal, she's been endlessly drowning for over 500 years.
But the movie also has a pre-credits scene that opens the door to a sequel. The exiled Booker, who now spends his time getting drunk in his native France, returns to his apartment to find Quynh waiting for him. Now, we learned Quynh's story earlier in the film, and she's a cautionary tale for why the Old Guard really do not want to be captured. Way back in the Middle Ages, Andy and Quynh were partners, before they were captured and tried as witches. The fact that no method of execution managed to kill them really seemed to back up the witch theory, so Quynh was locked in an iron coffin and thrown into the sea. She spent the next 500 years locked in a box, unable to die and slowly losing her mind.
The Old Guard Ending Explained
Unlike most action or superhero movies, The Old Guard spends as much time showing of the team's "superpower" of immortality while hunting down Copley and Merrick as it does allowing room to contemplate what it means to be immortal. What is the burden of immortality? What is the gift of immortality? What should you do when you know you will live for decades upon decades? What does it mean to watch those you love die while you get to live on? And, perhaps more importantly, The Old Guard asks whether living outside the mortal boundary is really worth it in the end.
As punishment for his betrayal, the group forbid Booker from contacting them for 100 years. The rest of the group meet with Copley, who reveals how their past missions had a greater effect than they ever knew, with the descendants of people they had rescued going on to help the world. With renewed faith in their mission, the group tasks Copley with keeping their existence a secret.
Six months later in Paris, a drunken Booker is astonished to meet Quynh in his apartment.
But by the movie's end, Quynh has somehow managed to escape her underwater prison and surprises Booker in Paris, where he's currently spending his time while exiled from the team.
"Booker," Quynh says, calmly taking a sip of water. "It's nice to finally meet you."
"The Old Guard" comic co-creator, Greg Rucka, who wrote the movie's screenplay, told Polygon that the return of Quynh (who is named Noriko in the comics) will be a big turning point in any potential sequel. In the comics, she's an antagonist to Andy's group, having become understandably damaged and misanthropic after drowning for centuries.
"I think what Veronica does with the one line she has sends chills down the spine," Rucka told Polygon about Quynh's arrival to Booker's apartment. "And the fact that she's pouring herself a glass of water. You kind of go, 'OK, the lights are on, but nobody's in that house anymore.'"
It's possible the real world may make it harder to film a sequel in the near future given the limitations that the coronavirus places on Hollywood. But with the way the "The Old Guard" ended, it would be very disappointing if we don't see a sequel sometime in the future.
A covert team of immortal mercenaries is suddenly exposed and must now fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.
