IVC Filters - Everything you need to know

I'm sure many of you all have seen commercials talking about IVC Filters and even commercials about lawsuits regarding IVC Filters. Many of you all don't even know what an IVC filter is, so I thought I'd do a little "unboxing" of an IVC Filter and talk about them. Time stamps below:

1:26 - What's an IVC Filter?
1:35 - Indications for an IVC Filter
3:31 - 'Unboxing' the IVC Filter
7:20 - Complications from IVC Filters

Who cares if the majority doesn’t like it. There are those of us who actually want to learn. We just had a lecture on a TIPS procedure, and I knew about it thanks to you Dr. Cellini!

I appreciate your video because I just had one put in today and the IR doc tried to talk me out of having this done after I was already consented the day before and already had the dangerous side effects discussion with my team before my arrival this morning to be the first case. Then surprise surprise to me after he spent 5 minutes trying to tell me I was allowing this bazooka to be used to kill an ant I really should reconsider before it’s too late. I am then taken into the procedure room and an absolutely completely different female radiologist proceeds to do the procedure. WTF? I feel like he wanted my time slot. No I am pretty sure he wanted it for what I overheard from him as a direct admit. So thanks for putting me at ease about sticking to my team and my decision.

I actually had a DVT and 3 PE's. Cancer surgery to remove my bladder couldn't be postponed. So, I had the IVC implanted through the Jugular. Stayed in about 4 months and they took it out. Thank God there weren't any complications. Nice video. Thanks. I did watch this video prior to having it done. Informative. Thanks.

I love these videos. I’m a PT student and we learned about these at a very basic level in our cardio-pulm rehab block, because in every setting we need to know if it’s safe to exercise the patient. I think it’s so interesting to see what other professionals do in their scope of practice and you should never limit your knowledge to just what’s in your own text books!

I had one implanted in 2009, in 2010 for the routine removal surgery the same doctor could not get it out because it had tilted. He assured me it’s fine to leave in in as a permanent device, and that I’m actually better off having it. No worries about a clot ever!
Here we are 13 years later after years of chest and back pains that doctors dubbed “normal”. Finally an abdominal x ray showed this thing was broken inside me. ( I pulled my records to find out it was already broken when the doctor tried to get it out and he didn’t tell me!!!).
A recent cat scan now shows it’s broken into pieces and some are outside of the vein, some are piercing the aorta and piercing Duodenum. Another piece grinding on my spine bone. Another piece I’m my lung (pulmonary artery) and another piece in my heart. I should consider myself very lucky that a over half inch long needle with points on both sides was able to travel up my vein, all the way through my heart and into the pulmonary artery without killing me. Also very lucky that the piece that is embedded in my heart didn’t kill me.

Along with being lucky that none of the other pieces that are everywhere didn’t kill me.

Now I just had a highly rated IR specialist do a complex removal for me. They were able to get the filter out, (causing a pseudoaneurysm) due to the tip leaving a crater hole. They were able to get the double sided needle out of my PA, but felt to risky to go for the one embedded in my heart. And could not go after the 3 other pieces that are completely out of the vein and just wondering around in the soft tissue of my body…. Also one of the ones left is the one grinding my spine with 1 side and tickling the Duodenum.

Watch yourselves people. DO NOT TRUST WHAT ONE DOCTOR SAYS. Get at least 3 opinions from unrelated Dr’s.

Unless of course, that my doctor is the only doctor to ever have done that.

Im a physical therapy student on my clinical rotation as an acute care PT in the hospital. One of my patients had an IVC filter- had no idea what it was until my CI described it. Essentially having the IVC filter was an indication for physical therapy as the patient had recurrent PE.
This video was extremely helpful and you should do more of them because it helps bridge the gap between different healthcare fields!

So thankful for the explanation of IVC filters, there use and possible problems that can be associated with its placement.

Third year med student here. I really enjoy these educational videos, Dr. Cellini! Now I know more about these things that I find on CT scans. Thank you for the pearls. As for the paperweight idea, you could make a mould in the shape of the paperweight you would like, suspend the IVC filter (possibly with the nifty hook), and fill up the mould with epoxy resin found at hardware stores.Lots of videos on youtube describing this process.
