Hey everyone! Today I'm sharing with you 7 camera settings you should always change. Even though I am a portrait photographer, these camera settings can apply to any genre of photography. Let me know in the comments which one was the most helpful and if I missed out on any!

Always buy gear with the expectation that it's the final product-100% agree. People complaining that camera manufacturers are slow to release updates grinds my gears, I see updates as a bonus.

I have never updated the firmware on a camera unless I am notified by the camera company that this is an important "recall" type of update. I was a professional (paid) photographer from 1976 to 2008. I did make the transition to digital in the last 10 years of that but film was still crucial for some projects to the end of my professional career. Because of this I shoot mostly JPG. I use Fine mode and the largest image. This is mostly because I was used to getting things "right" in the camera. I use minus .7 stops as a default and often more. My post work is only to bring up the levels a bit and maybe a tiny boost of color. I find all of your views in keeping with this idea of getting it right when you shoot, and yes I was also a videographer from 1978 to 2010 which is why I believe in mostly in camera adjustments. Thank you for this nice video. An old retired camera dude.

One small tip I would like to add is take photo even if the camera has not required focus. This is good for wedding photographyon the dance floor. I stop down my lens to f4 or f5.6 and sometimes the lens auto focus is off but since I'm stopped down it will still be in focus. I have to disable this feature on Olympus.

One other tip some cameras like Olympus you have to turn on auto ISO for M mode in the menu.

May I ask you to make a video regarding the settings of a camera for wedding in a church with poor lighting and what are the best framing, distance, or angles? Thank you very much!!

A small correction: The compressed Raw file loads faster with about half the size; it loads approximately 2 times faster in Lightroom. Some cameras also shoot faster in the buffer with compressed raw compared to uncompressed. The principle is quite simple: the raw file captures unnecessary information that is removed, resulting in no noticeable difference in quality loss during editing but with a much smaller file size. Compressed cannot be compared to a ZIP file that needs to be uncompressed, taking more time until you can see and use the actual files. Some photographers have made that comparison, but with a compressed RAW from Sony, it's just the necessary raw data, making it smaller and faster both during shooting, editing and importing. PS: love your channel !!!!

Many thanks for posting Julia; another brilliant range of Camera / Shooting considerations, particularly for us "Newbie's" ; as an aside, are you considering purchasing the new DJI Inspire 3?

Yes to all but only if it applies to your genre! BUT a story I read in a book about one of my cameras - A National Geographic photographer sending jpegs to HQ wanted his RAWS he sent later to be edited to look like his jpegs because it is what he saw on the back off the camera at the time of capture. An impossible thing to do due to. There are settings that only affect Jpegs and what you see on the camera screen. D-Range on Sony cameras can be set to auto or the selected setting just this one item can change how shadows are brightened to show detail and this one many settings that in Post no slider can adjust to. You can shoot RAW and Jpeg and both will look alike but different when the RAW is saved as a TIF or even a Jpeg. The point is you can learn all the settings in the camera where it edits in camera and it is the artist so to speak like today's AI's with many years of formulas embedded or you become the artist with sliders in the many post processing programs either will be great whichever you pick.

Thanks nice video with good info. I shoot compressed RAW, but didn't realize that it slows down LR post processing.

HI JULIA, THRE HAVE BEEN REPORTS ABOUT VIDEOS SHOT WITH NEW SONY ALPHA CAMERAS CAUSING MORE EYE STRAIN. ANY SIMILAR EXPERIENCE REGARDING THIS? ALSO MANY CONTENT CREATORS USING NEW FULL FRAME SONY CAMERAS ARE GETTING PUFFY AND SWOLLEN EYES DUE TO THE EXCESS STRAIN. HOW IS YOUR EXPERIENCE?

What do you think about turning off silent shooting and electronic front curtain shutter?

What about lossless compressed vs compressed and uncompressed?
With my a7iv I have to use compressed to get 10 fps. With all other types of photography I use large lossless compressed. The size varies from 35 to 48 mb with large lossless compressed.
