Discover the mystery of the second Roman emperor, Tiberius, and his sudden mood change to a sadistic murderer and his dark Island.
Augustus, the first emperor of Rome, left a great legacy and a memory of a capable man and ruler. Similar could have been said about his stepson and successor, Tiberius, were it not for the sudden caprice to abandon the imperial capital for the rocky island of Capri.

The reasons for it remain one of the puzzles of history. The most accepted answers are that he was tired of politicking and intrigues of imperial court. Additionally, his face was by then disfigured by a disease.

Tiberius would spend the remaining eleven years of his life on the island, during which any good impressions as a ruler were overwhelmed by his decadence, cruelty and paranoia.

He built himself a dozen villas (villa jovis), containing prisons, underground dungeons, torture chambers, and execution chambers. Even under the most favorable interpretations, he killed ferociously and almost at random. Needless to say, no recounting of his actions would be suitable for children. It is probable that by then his mind was disordered.

For his heir he settled on Caligula, despite his questionable morals even in childhood. “I am nursing a viper in Rome’s bosom,” was Tiberius’s observation.
And so what is today a nice island holiday destination, actually holds a much darker past.
