The late 2000s really pushed the limit on environmental destruction in their games . Crysis, Farcry 2, Fracture, The Force Unleashed, Stranglehold, Red Faction Guerrilla, Bad Company 2. We still have outliers nowadays like Control and indies like Teardown but it sadly doesn't seem to be on most developers priority list anymore.

For the interior destruction in buildings: check the cqb pack in battlefield 3. It's even better than what we see in 2042's.

Despite being a top down game I honestly think Hatred still had some of the best environmental damage I've seen in a while, you can really appreciate it more if you use a first or third person mod.

Bad Company 2 is still my favorite battlefield, the destruction effects were glorious

Very disappointing, AAA gaming is definitely heading in the wrong direction.

What a sad state of affairs, RIP Battlefield.

Great analysis! As far as the base game maps go there are a few buildings on Hourglass and Discarded that can be completely destroyed with maybe some small amount of wall left for cover on discarded. Hopefully they use more of these in future maps. I had a match on Hourglass where the tornado destroyed multiple buildings in the village, some of which were left with nothing but the ground floor.

Wasn't Interior destruction in BF3 Close Quarters maps more intense than the new BF?

For the terrain deformation, I'm pretty sure that BF1 had a limit to how many craters you could have. It was really high though so it wasn't something you'd likely hit

They just announced a huge update for enlisted that added huge terrain deformation, more than battlefields, you could even dig tunnels with shovels. The update ain't out yet but I found it pretty cool

Why would anyone buy this game over BF1, or BF4 ? There is so much less content, for a much higher cost, and so many bugs, and missing features from previous games .. an absolutely pointless, soulless, corporate product.

I miss red faction man. I used to just dig holes for hours as a kid in that game

Bf4 bring down a skyscraper, a dam, a huge satellite

It's now just a FPS in a very big scale.

Either every surface has some destructive effect or just don't bother if it's not consistent

The Portal maps (especially Arica Harbor and Caspian Border) are just as destructible as the original games and IMO are more responsive.

Biggest problem I see is how inconsistent the destruction is. Some destruction is impressive and probably took a lot of work to implement, but you never quite know if you can destroy destroy something, or how much you can destroy something. That just doesnt feel natural or believable.

They probably tried to do that with the visible concerete sections, but that feels pretty bad in its own way. Very artificial and ugly.

Hey, Val!

Can you please do a destruction overview on Men of War: Assault Squad 2? I gifted you that game a long time ago, it has got some interesting mechanics both in building destruction and vehicle destruction -- for instance, you can damage any module of a tank without destroying the tank itself -- and it will have visual feedback. Also there is terraforming (to some degree) and all buildings are completely destructible.
