The scanner has a delay between scanning objects with the same UPC to avoid double scans, that's why he had to try and rescan items multiple times. If it were all different items he probably would've been faster

Cashiers in my country would just scan 1 item the same amount of times as the amount of that item we are buying, so if we were buying 3 beers, they would scan one of them 3 times
