n the 1950s, a man name Steven Henson (his name had previously been Ken) invented a creamy salad dressing at his ranch in California. He called it his ranch dressing. And that ranch? It was called Hidden Valley Ranch. Everyone loved the dressing—so much so that Clorox bought it and marketed what is now the most popular salad dressing in America: Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing.

Here I am super young thinking ranch dressing has been around forever. Turns out it wasn't even commercially sold 50 years ago.

Honestly, considering how much they’ve made off of this dressing, Clorox got a steal!

And Henson was a black plumber working with a construction crew, doing double duty as the cook when he invented this dressing. He and his wife later bought land that they named hidden valley ranch where they served the dressing, also selling and shipping a dry packet of the dressing. Henson sold the dressing company to the Clorox company in 1972. Excellence!

A few ironies:
1) Ranch is white.
2) Ranch was invented by a black man
3) Hidden Valley Ranch was purchased by Clorox bleach know for whiteness.

Careful with where you get your images...the picture of the Hidden Valley Ranch that you say is in California is actually in Pine, Colorado....where my parents

So sad! The "Hidden Valley Ranch" photo used is of a different ranch. Just look at the photo; full of pine trees. I doubt that "Hidden Valley Ranch" is anywhere near Southern CA. The actual ranch is super cool with lots of history, Indian artifacts, a stage coach stop, waterfalls, and an old brothel amongst other things. I have been the Realtor for the ranch more than once. Why make this video and use an incorrect photo and also leave out all the coolness of the property? (sigh...) I was going to send this off to some of my former clients but not now... I suppose the video is all about Ranch dressing coming from a ranch, to which I have to say "duh".

The story, of course, is far more complicated than that. "Buttermilk (salad) dressing" recipes were common in the 1920s. There were many other products called "ranch dressing" dating from the 1950s and 1960s.

Yes but the crapola that is sold in bottles is not NOT the original as the store bought crap has to be shelf stable so they added soybean oil and all those other chemicals which killed the original flavor. Now you have to make it yourself in order to retain the original flavor

Whatever, Ken's ranch dressing is better. And Ken was in Street Fighter 2 so whatever.
