How to learn English grammar
How to learn English grammar step by step

Hi, Excelians! You’ve already learned about subject complements with us, so today we’re going to tackle object complements.

In grammar, a complement is a word that improves or “completes” another word. This is easy to remember because, as you might have noticed, the words “complete” and “complement” have the same root!

Simply put, an object complement is a word or phrase that follows a direct object and renames or describes it somehow.

Unlike in sentences with a subject complement, sentences with object complements must use an action verb. This is so because the object complemented is a direct object, and direct objects can only be in sentences with action verbs.

Let’s look at how a direct object can take a complement:
Sally painted her new fence purple.
The direct object in this sentence, “fence,” is being described as purple. So “purple” is complementing “fence”! In other words, the fence is purple.

Easy enough, right? Let’s look at some further examples:
Kramer calls Bob Cobb “The Maestro,” but Elaine forgets to!

Bob Cobb, the direct object of “calls,” is renamed here as “The Maestro.” Bob is The Maestro even though Jerry doesn’t like it!

Now, let’s look at one more example, Excelians!

George finds his girlfriend pretentious after she calls his doorman “Samuel.”

Here, we have two sets of direct objects with their complements! George’s girlfriend, Patrice, is pretentious, and his doorman is Samuel.

As you can see, Excelians, practicing makes grammar simple! We’ll be back next week with more grammar fun! See you then!

In korea they are teaching that object complement if and only if there is only the direct object...and can not have an indirect object whatsoever. Is this true?
