$98 Huffy Scout MTB from Walmart | Is the Headset Tapered?

For quite a while I have received comments asking me to take a look at the Huffy Scout. Recently, I caught it on Rollback pricing at Walmart for $98, so I purchased one to give it a closer look. Most of the attention is centered around what looks like a tapered headtube. Also, the bike offers some features normally not seen at it's low pricing. Features like: dual disc brakes and a treadless headset.

One thing I didn't expect is how small this bike is...It's tiny for a bike listed as fitting riders up to 5'10". Another thing is how heavy the bike is. For such a small bike it is very hefty weighing in right at 38lbs.

Check out the video to see if that headset is tapered. Then leave your comment on the bike. Is it something you were considering or have bought? If so, what do you think after seeing the video? Comment below.

The frame is styled after a 26" dirt jumper frame. That's why it's so short, and has a steep head tube angle.

I can’t wait to see someone build a sick dirt jumper from one of these, you should try it Kev!

Lots of people saying here that it looks like a dirt jumper. Frankly, I think the geometry is off. I thing this could make a good entry level street trials bike with a rigid fork and single speed drivetrain. I think some sturdy wheels, better cranks and better handlebars could make this really fun for tricks. The drawback of not having a Derailleur hanger would also not be an issue with a single speed drivetrain.

I just saw this bike at Wal-Mart a few weeks ago and considered it for a everyday street bike for me until I sat on it...lol being 6'3 I felt like Josh brolin riding that little girls bike in the goonies lmao. I did buy it tho for my nephew who's on the little side and he loves it! Great buy for the little guys out there at that price point. Keep up the great reviews!

Took one look at it and the geometry of the frame immediately made me think of the specialized pitch. Except the pitch is leagues better

Kev this would be a great project bike. You would need to replace the frame, handlebars, front forks, seat and stem, the wheels, chain and drivetrain, the brakes. Then you would really have something there!!

I’m upgrading mine, all together I’ve got about $200 into it. New wake bar, wake 90mm stem, better pedals, and lock on grips. Trigger shifters are in the mail. It’s actually proving to be a fun project bike!

Thanks for the video, I just bought my brother one for his birthday and said he really likes it

Bought this since may, the first things i did were change to a 400mm seat post. Then get a stem that is 100mm, so my knees will not hit the bar or my hands. Kev, i wouldn't get 40mm stem, it brings it too close to you.

Then a 720 mm handle bar. Of course, change out the shifter/brake lever. This thing is still low, but kinda fun in a blue trail.

It's kind of really shameful because it's got a cool looking frame that it's high-tensile Steel even if they made that frame a chromoly frame there be some potential there but it doesn't even have a rear derailleur hanger cool looking bike but not very good

Darn, I was hoping this would be a good next bike for my son who is outgrowing his 24" trek with rim brakes. But at 38 lbs, that's half his weight, so no dice.
