Prelude in A minor by Visée

The first piece I learned on theorbo. Robert de Visée's beautiful Prelude from his suite in A minor. The theorbo is strung with gut strings and tuned down to the historical French Baroque pitch of 392Hz (AKA one whole tone lower than modern pitch). I'm playing here without nails. Theorbo by Klaus Jacobsen.

I'll never fully understand how these instruments became overshadowed, even if more modern types have louder sound or other benefits. What a wonderful timbre. Brilliant performance and piece too. ♥

Always amazed at the quality of tone coming out of those low strings

The prelude washed over my ears, and I swear my lights dimmed, and the sky darkened with ebbed despair. Like its fuckin bananas what music can make one perceive!
Honestly, I believe that instruments were created to mimic the metaphor of heartstrings, and to give the heartstrings a voice of their own. I wonder who wrote this piece, (It probably says on the video card somewhere lol) cause they must have poured their sorrow and sweet irony into this.

This piece almost sounds like its modern. Is it that there's flourishing or improvisation on your part, giving off that impression, or am I just crazy?

Also, such beautiful vibratos. What an incredible instrument.

That is such a beautiful piece.
The sound and the reverb were so perfect!

Beautifully played, this one of the pieces that made me fall in love with the Theorbo. Waiting for a rendition of De Visee's Chaconne En Sol Majeur :D

A video on how to read those notes in the beginning would be very interesting.

Could you tell me was the piece written for theorbo, or for 13-course lute originally? Also was the original in nouvel accord or vieil accord? (Trying to think of which lute to buy next--and am doubting between theorbo and 13-course baroque in nouvel accord... beautiful repertoires for both, but theorbo is a bit scarily big).

This should be lovely! Will edit to tell you if it is.
Edit: Ooh! That was a much different vibe than I was expecting! Very dramatic, just the right thing for an opera instrument. And as relaxing to listen to as always.

My guitar will never sound as good as it did yesterday, after listening to this. Amazing! You are a master.

Are there any stringed instruments that you don't play? I barely play classical guitar.

Does your shoulder ever hurt from playing?

Video on a Baryton someday? A Viola Da Gamba with ten or so plucked strings behind the neck.

My yamaha C40 classical guitar has sweet mellow sound. But I am not satisfied with the tone quality. So which strings are the best for this guitar, I really want more bright and high volume. Can you please suggest any strings brand?

So good. I would like a video on reading that tab at the beginning of the video.

I wonder how a theme song from Diablo (tristram) would sound arranged on this wonderful instrument. Since age of 14 when I heard it for the first time (and the game came out in either 1996 or 1999, can't recall now) that piece of music haunts me... And just found out today about theorbo and how wonderful it sounds when you play it, I can't help but wonder what such combination would do to my soul... Probably cry, or have my ears orgasm, or both. Thank you for bringing this enchanted instrument to us common folk...
