Did you know that in Moldova, 80% of the population identifies as Romanian? Historically, Moldova was part of Romania until it was occupied by the Russian Empire in 1812 and later by the USSR in 1940 under the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact. The union of 1918 existed but was short-lived due to the Russian occupation in 1940.

In 1991, there was an attempt to unite the two states again, but this initiative was derailed by Russian interference. This interference manifested through the Transnistrian War, led by Russian and Ukrainian forces, and the Gagauz conflict in the same year. Furthermore, corruption within Moldova’s political institutions played a significant role. Pro-union activists were marginalized, many were threatened, and some even assassinated.

In Romania, the parliament, influenced by individuals loyal to Russia, refused to support the unification or recognize Moldova’s independence formally. Thus, the union was hindered by corruption, money, and Russian influence. Additionally, the older generation, deeply influenced by decades of Soviet propaganda, strongly opposed the idea of unification.
