That first line of the description should actually start out as:

To fulfill our contractual obligations for Five Ten sponsoring DH Fantasy, here is an advertisement disguised as "just another mtb video imparting the super likeable and relatable Ben Cathro's knowledge on..."

Tell five ten we want flat shoes with a BOA system.

Being able to drop a leg off to catch myself is part of riding loose, and loose is fast in most cases. I don't care if its faster or slower or whatever, I can go faster knowing that I can take a leg off whenever I want. Yes, readjusting during a race run is a thing, but once your foot is stuck there, you're good to go for the most part.

Thanks Ben. I finally understand the confusing 5-10 lineup.

I've used five ten impacts for years, but personally I think the specialized 2fo dh shoe is gripper.

I've been running Impact mid-tops for a few years now when I run flat pedals. I like the added ankle protection. When I'm riding flats, protection and grip are most important to me.

Nice comprehensive video about this lineup, but I'm here to say this Deviate is mint!

I raced downhill on flat pedals because I feared not being able to get away from the bike in the event of a crash. I ended up with a set of Brooklyn Machine Works Shinburgers. Best flat pedals ever in my opinion

I have 3 pairs of different models five ten, one pair of ride concept, Mavic deemax flat soles, Leatt 3, DC mtb specific whatever model ...

What I wear the most on flats is a pair of ecco waterproof golf shoes with boa, they look like new and it's been a year+ winter riding included. Sole is grippy and durable I still wear them all the time...

Someone gets shafted somehow...

I’ve got a pair of trail cross and a pair of free rider pro’s. the free rider pro’s are marginally grippier (most likely due to the sole shape?) and definitely stiffer. I feel the trail cross flex underfoot at times. At the end of the day, both are super grippy and are awesome on the trail!

flat pedals are worth it simply for the ability to correct split second situations where I might otherwise crash. That's worth the trade off of less efficiency and consistency (foot is in the same place) for me.

So what about the other 10 brands that make fantastic flat shoes too?

I miss a decent water "proof" version nowadays. I had the ELC version in the past which were pretty good. With the additional flap over the laces it also ensured you can untie them without being filled up with mud. They should bring back the ELC version.

I like shoes with a flexy sole, I feel it gives me more connection with the terrain.
