I agree, it feels a little strange to call the c() function "concatenate, " since I too am used to thinking of concatenation as an operation performed on strings. I was simply using the same terminology that's used in the manual "An Introduction to R" on CRAN. It wouldn't surprise me if c() actually stands for combine rather than concatenate.
