Demonstrating compressor attack/release with a shaker to define the rhythm and subdivisions is genius. Well done!

Thanks for the video! Especially thanks for pointing out the difference in the A/R dials for the different comps and how on the 76 it's a speed dial, while on presence, it's a time dial.

Humm.. now you have me wondering about my Attack and Release knobs!!
I bought a Carvin CG200 Opti (physical hardware) to master an EP for vinyl. The comp's Attack and Release are on an odd scale.
The Attack is "4" at 7 o'clock, "40" at 12 o'clock and "400" at 5 o'clock.
The Release is "10" at 7 o'clock, "1000" at 12 o'clock and "2000" at 5 o'clock.
I assume those are milliseconds, but its such an odd jump, I guess its multiplying times 10 as you turn it clockwise(?) Which end would be "fast" and which end would be "slow"?
Anyway thanks for the video, greatly appreciated!
Cheers

the difference between those 2 compressors, CLA is a peak base compressor while the studio one comp is a RMS base comp

Bravo. Many don' t understand basic, where to turn knob, left or right for faster.
1 ms is very faster than 1000 ms (even knob is turmed on left).

"Fast Relase, Slow Attack: Brings up the quieter shakes, and brings down the louder parts."

That is not correct though. Slow Attack and fast recovery means the transient will not be compressed, but the parts after it will, so slow attack fast release makes for a much louder transient after adjusting make-up gain. Since the transient has been the loudest bit to begin with, you can't say that the louder parts are brought down.

That was great. I never realised that on slow release youre not basically doing anything haha

Ironic that i can't hear this tutorial well enough to watch it on the bus 😂 might need Compression

I'm not sure whether it was a good idea to explain a principle that is applicable for all compressors by demonstrating it on such an odd one. I think it would have been better to start out with the standard s1 compressor, then explain the principle on an out-of-the-ordinary one. Well explained though!

Good demo but it leaves me wondering: If you're going to do a Studio One Expert compression demo, why not use the compressor which comes with Studio one, knowing that everyone watching has this? Instead, we're looking at a third party emulator of a sort of quirky vintage machine where the controls are not a standard configuration. It doesn't make it very straight forward for newbies which is mostly who are going to be looking for tutorials on compressor settings. (I only ask this question because it's a Studio One Expert video)

Am I the only one who was pissed, then found out they were only pissed cuz they've been using the Attack and decay backwards on the 76... like Jack ass lmao
