Our One Big Thing For The Year | Nature Study In Our Homeschool

Every year, we choose one big thing to focus on for the year in our homeschool. This year, we’ve decided to focus on nature study and we’re all excited about it!

We carry a ziplock bag with us for anything we bring back (fallen leaves, seashells, rocks). We also use all the materials you use with a blue pencil (John Muir Laws recommends for tracing). We keep it simple too, do when we can. I give the kids freedom to write, draw, record. Sometimes it’s a nature inspired poem form a breeze they enjoyed or recording weather or observing ducks and their behavior over a few weeks at a nearby pond. We aren’t perfect, but we keep at it!

I just wanted to say thank you for this idea. I did this last year and it was really successful in helping us incorporate something new into our school year without feeling overwhelmed. Last year was weekly art/artist study and this year is going to be weekly music appreciation/solfege. We really enjoyed the mini beast unit this summer. We learned a lot and it went really well with our summer goals for outdoor time.

We are doing nature study this year and following the Exploring Nature with Children. How is it different than the Pocketful of Pinecones?

One thing I've struggled with for nature study is lesson planning for it. I'm not sure what the basic lesson plans for Nature Study should look like 🤷‍♀️
