the tea on @FreePeople 🫖

did you know that Free People (and @anthropologie ) are owned by URBN, as in @urbanoutfitters 🤯 Sometimes fast fashion hides behind bigger price tags to fool us that it’s not fast fashion 🙃
When Free People invited me to an event this summer, I told them no, and explained why. I was actually surprised to see that someone from their team replied (it’s not every day that we get to talk directly to these types of brands!) and she sent me their Impact report, which said “Transparency is essential and we want our customers and stakeholders to hold us accountable” So naturally, I had a few questions…
Free People’s impact page is filled with greenwashing lingo, as they promotes that 25% of their collection meets their Care FP standards (which only require 50% of the materials to be responsibly sourced). Which means that 75% of their collection is not. It’s like saying, “I don’t cheat on my partner three months of the year!” while cheating on them the other nine 🙃
If transparency was *actually* essential for them, then surely they would share how many items they sell per year and how much their garments workers are paid, right? It seems like they didn’t want to be held accountable after all.
Remake Our World gave URBN a score of 2 out of 150 🤯 There is a wonderful video by on of my favorite creators @VenetiaLaManna_ who breaks this down even more - definitely go watch it!
I’m sharing this because we all deserve to know where our clothes come from, who made them, and to peel back the curtain on greenwashing. There is no room for brands who continue to exploit people & planet for the sake of profit 💀
