Please don't breed Penny. there is a big problem with people breeding horses "for the experience" & the result is an amazing number of unwanted horses. The majority of these horses end up being sold to the killers for dog food. A few are lucky enough to be rescued.

I agree, it’s not a good idea to breed penny. Not only for the reasons you suggested, but unless she has really good bloodlines, and has great movement, what’s the point? She hasn’t proved herself either. If she were doing out to shows and placing, then I could see the potential there. There are so many other horses out there, breeding just because you can is not a good enough reason. Not every horse needs to be bred. It’s expensive, time-consuming, and requires a lot of experience. Stud season is always exhausting. It’s cute to have a new born foal, but it’s hard work. I’ve handled foals for over 6 years now, and I still find it a challenge when we have one that’s very skittish or boisterous. My boss spent thousands of pounds trying to get one of her mares into foal last year, and that was using her own stallion so she didn’t have to pay for the stallion fee. All for the mare to not take! The scan fees, stallion fee, HMV vaccines, stud yard livery for foaling down… it isn’t something to take lightly and that’s if everything goes to plan. Some people are lucky and have an easy run, but it’s just not worth it unless you have a real reason for doing it. Putting penny through it just so you could have a mini-her just isn’t justifiable, in my opinion. Maybe one day, it could be an option with another horse you have but I think you should just let penny be.

Just because she’s 17 doesn’t mean you have to be retire her soon. I only retired mine at 20 because I was going off to university. Many people keep their horses in work past that, if they are sound. Heck one horse I know is still being ridden and she’s close to 40! You don’t do rigorous work with her, so there’s no reason to retire her. A light hack or a bit of field work would do her well as she gets older to keep up her condition and strength. It will also keep her brain active!

I personally would not breed Penny. Knowing her as well as I do, I doubt she would be a great mother. She isn’t registered nor does she boast the phenomenal conformation you want to breed for. She’s a great horse but at 17, breeding her now is a risk for her. You should be able to ride Penny for years if you work her consistently, if lightly. There is also a lot of expense with breeding plus you have to assess if your facility is set up for it. You may have to separate mother and foal for up to 3-4 months. There is a lot to think about and mostly, what would you do with her foal anyway? An unregistered, gaited weanling in Ontario will not recover your costs ( vets, stud fee, post birth feed and care…). Watching you, selling would become traumatic and then you can’t have foal broken to ride until at least 4 or 5.

I’m kinda confused… you should breed horses young. 17 is not a good age to breed, especially if she will be a maiden mare. Foaling is hard enough… I don’t think a maiden mare at the age of 17 is a good idea at all. Horses produce their best offspring when young. But it’s your horse… just try to look out for your horses best interest🤷🏼‍♀️

Breeding a 17 year old MAIDEN mare is very hard and the likelihood of her catching (getting pregnant) is very unlikely. After the age of 10, maiden mare cervixes get long and tight… entrapping fluid and making it very hard for an embryo to drop and live in the uterus. There’s also many risks for foaling a maiden mare… let alone a 17 year old mare. There’s so many horses in this world.. you can always get another young horse… no point in waisting money trying to breed her and not succeeding and it’s not worth the risk of losing Penny. Also breeding is very very expensive. Even with young horses that get bred and get in foal first try… it’s expensive. Imagine trying multiple times and still not having a good outcome 😳

Not only that, breeding penny means you’d want to breed to another Twh. Breeding to a horse that is not gaited such as a quarter horse may result in a few different gaits. I personally own one. She’s a paso appendix cross and she froxtrots. It’s a diagonal 4 beat gait. You cannot post a foxtrot. I got her knowing she was this way because I bought her mother(paso) 4 months prior. So as someone who has product of I do not recommend. 😅😂 she’s perfect for me but I can see why other people wouldn’t want her.

I agree that it wouldn’t be a good idea to breed Penny. It just wouldn’t be okay because of all of the horses you have to take care of already. I am glad that you aren’t going to do it.

Fertility begins to decline at around 15 years of age as mares become more difficult to get in foal and the rate of pregnancy loss increases. Your right to decide not to you could loose her or put her through to much stress.

Although it’s a bad idea I think like the first few things you said were the good things and I think that’s a good idea I think you should bring Penny unless you don’t want to it’s fine

I did yard work on Monday by cleaning up the sticks around my yard and putting the sticks in the fire pit.

No hate here and I don’t want to get bad publicity I feel like it’s kind of a bad idea kind of a good idea but 17 is a bad age To be breeding

Good thinking about not breeding her especially at age 17. If you want younger horse, just keep an eye out. Maybe make a trip to Tennessee if still want a Tennessee Walker like Penny. But pick breeder that doesn't do Big Lick, so doesn't have the problems they have.

Laura, I bet Penny would be a great mom. it's not that hard. Momma takes care of it & you get it used to humans. Chino will warm up to it fast even though it's not his
Have you introduced Ellie to Chino, yet?

If you breed her you should do it with a quarter horse or a draft 😊 if you ever decide to change your mind 😊
