In Defense of Plants - The Vernal Dam Hypothesis

Back in 1978, a guy by the name of Robert Muller put forth a very intriguing idea. It was coined the vernal-dam hypothesis. Essentially, spring flowering plants are thought to act as nutrient sinks during a time when not much else is actively taking up things like nitrogen and phosphorus from the soil.
