The Hussite Wars or The Bohemian Wars (aka Hussite Revolution) - Kingdom Come Deliverance History

The Hussite Wars, also called the Bohemian Wars or the Hussite Revolution, were a series of wars fought between the Christian Hussites and the combined Christian Catholic forces of Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund, the Papacy, European monarchs loyal to the Catholic Church, as well as various Hussite factions. After initial clashes, the Utraquists changed sides in 1432 to fight alongside Roman Catholics and opposed the Taborites and other Hussite spinoffs. These wars lasted from 1419 to approximately 1434.

The unrest began after pre-Protestant Christian reformer Jan Hus was executed by the Catholic Church in 1415 for heresy. Because the King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia had plans to be crowned the Holy Roman Emperor, he suppressed the religion of the Hussites, yet it continued to spread.[3] When King Wenceslaus IV died of natural causes a few years later, the tension stemming from the Hussites grew stronger. In Prague and various other parts of Bohemia, the Catholic Germans living there were forced out.

Wenceslaus's brother, Sigismund, who had inherited the throne, was outraged by the spread of Hussitism. He got permission from the pope to launch a crusade against the Hussites. Large numbers of crusaders came from all over Europe to fight. Prague was attacked and then abandoned. However, the Hussites subsequently laid siege to the garrison of crusaders, and took back nearly all of the land they had previously captured, resulting in the crusade being a complete failure.

I think that there is definitely evidence that would suggest that the series will eventually lead to the Hussite period. However, it is interesting that they would then put "spoilers" about characters within the codex of the game. However, I will list off all the things I have noticed.

1. Jan Hus - It mentions Jan Hus a few times in the game, firstly from Father Godwin in the first half of the main storyline. He tells Henry of a great theologian named Jan Hus, who preaches in Prague in the common tongue, and speaks of the corruption and evils of the modern church, and how it has strayed from its original teachings, as Jesus of Nazareth walked barefoot and had no place to lay his head, whereas the Bishops and Priests of Christendom have vast treasuries and are spoiled and pampered.

After hearing this, Henry will make some remark about Hus and the Church stating, "Not if they burn him at the stake first" in a sort of joking manner (which is obviously ironic foreshadowing to historians). You can then choose, after a night of fun, to speak to the congregation at Mass, and if you succeed in your task, Henry will essentially give a Jan Hus sermon, which Godwin spoke of the night prior, and the people will LOVE it.

I believe that this is definitely a contributing factor, which is building the story to come.

2. Konrad Kyeser - When Henry finally convinces Konrad to accompany him to the sight of the siege at Talmberg, the siege engineer speaks of something beyond comprehension for many of the nobles and soldiers there; "Rochetta". He speaks of having many black powder weapons which would fire hails of essentially rocket propelled arrows or bolts into the castle. Everyone is astonished by this idea, as many of them had never seen or heard of such inventions. It is then, that Sir Divish makes a remark along the lines of "Unfortunately, black powder is not in abundance in these provinces."

Konrad is disappointed, but understands the dilemma. I believe that this is definitely evidence, and foreshadowing of games to come. It was nudging and hinting at the fact that, black powder, though rare, will make a big difference in the next few decades, as we know it does in the Hussite period.


3. Characters - There are a handful of characters in KCD that are definitely involved in the Hussite wars.

King Sigismund, as we know, is heavily involved, by having Jan Hus burned at the stake, and then fighting in at least three major campaigns against them, all leading in mostly catastrophe.

Sir Hans Capon, according to the codex, and what little information I can find on him, did sign a petition after the unjust death of Jan Hus, stating his disapproval over the entire farcical trial and execution. However, he did fight with the League of Lords against the Hussites, most likely because keeping his province and title, were more important to him, than his religious ideals. He would then die in battle against the Hussites in 1419 AD.

Sir Radzig, was also involved, but only in the early stages, regrettably. He was killed in a tavern in 1416 AD by a mob of angry miners who were incited by the posthumous Jan Hus movement. This could definitely make Henry very much against the movement, even though he is of humble origins. Who knows, maybe it will be the player's decision whether or not to side with the Hussites. Despite the death of his father in a tragic situation, he may feel more hatred towards Istvan Toth, Markvart von Aulitz, and King Sigismund, who would be fighting the Hussites.

Father Godwin would definitely be all for the Hussite Movement, though he may not agree entirely with the Taborites, as he wishes for everyone to live in peace (which may be influenced by his younger years as a mercenary, and possibly fighting in wars in the east, against the Turks, which may explain his Cuman helmet and weapons in his home). He obviously feels ill will towards the church's greed, and even wants to help the "heretics" escape the Vicar in the quest 'Waldensians' - which was a term for proto-protestant movements, just like the Hussites.

Not to mention Johanka and her odd beliefs in "A Woman's Lot" DLC.

With all that being said, it would be quite silly for Warhorse to not eventually get into the Hussite period. It may not be in the next game, but I believe that if they continue the series, it will definitely get there. They have already laid the foundation for it. It would also be really interesting to possibly get quests from Jan Zizka himself. Perhaps if they make it a decision to pick what side you fight for, as I mentioned earlier, it could change the game drastically. If you pick the Hussites, you could get ambushed on the roads by soldiers and mercenaries of Sigismund and other towns loyal to Catholicism. If you pick the League of Lords, you could get ambushed by Hussites, and the like. Of course you could ALWAYS get ambushed by bandits and brigands, who have no allegiance. Imagine stumbling into a skirmish on the road between brigands and Hussites, if you sided with the League of Lords, everyone there would be trying to kill you too.

1. Not only German nobles were Catholics in the lands of the Czech crown. In Moravia, most nobles were Catholic, as well the commoners, or there were czech catholic cities, which were besieged by hussites, for example Pilsen (where the beer is made) was unsuccessfully besieged by Prokop Holý (one Hussite governors).
2. There was nothing about the nationalism in Hussite revolution, there were also Germans (even Poles) in Hussite field armies (there were Polish Hussites, because hussites had good relationships with Poland, they helped them in war against teutonic order). Massacres, which happened during the wars were had a purely religious undertone.

Well done. I am from Tabor originally (also pronounced Tahbor with the accent on the first syllable). In 1420 it was an abandoned stronghold and recently occupied by the Hussite revolutionary citizens of Sezimovo Usti nearby. Tabor was named after a biblical mountain, and being on a promontory with a river on one side and a ravine with a stream on another was a good defensive position.

The one minor quibble, the image of the first defenestration at 4.55 min in 1419 was actually the 2nd defenestration in 1618 from Prague Castle.

Sudomer was the first real battle where the wagon defense was used, but there was an earlier battle (more a skirmish) at Nekmer where Zizka may have used the wagons in defense.

It is worth mentioning that guns at this point were more like glorified steel tubes, sometimes on a stick, or mini-cannons than what would come later during the renaissance such as the arquebus or what most people would probably envision as a gun-looking gun now. They were also very inaccurate and slow to reload, making them only somewhat effective when used en masse. Their only real advantage in battle was their ability to put fear into the enemy and lower their morale. Many people don’t realize that guns did exist in the tail end of the Middle Ages, so they don’t really understand much about them.
