1961 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Cabriolet
With Italian styling by Ghia of Turin, Italy and hand construction carried out by coach builders Karmann of Osnabrück in Germany, the Karmann Ghia was a winning combination for Volkswagen. In 1969 the Karmann Ghia was included on the list of the world's most beautifully designed products. With graceful, timeless design the car’s styling has been compared to the ever classic Porsche Speedster.
Production of the Karman Ghia spanned 19 years from 1955 to 1974 during which a total of 363,401 coupes and 80,899 cabriolet’s were built.
This vehicle was a genuine Australian import and manufactured in August 1961.
This car undertook a full "ground up" restoration and took more than 5 years, every panel, nut, bolt and component was repaired and/or replaced. An extensive list of parts had to be sourced across Australia and from all over the world.
This restoration was particularly challenging due to it being incomplete so there was a long list of parts needed to complete the project. The result was the bringing together of components spanning many years of production.
I was surprised how poor some repro parts are. My goal was to integrate the best performance and safely features of later models while maintaining the integrity of the early classic styling.
The car can now be seen regularly driving around the NSW Central Coast particularly on sunny days when the top is always down.
This vehicle is available for film, television and advertising work.
