Most people teach this maneuver wrong. The proper way to learn the friction zone is to pull in the clutch, put it in 1st gear, turn the throttle a quarter turn and hold the throttle on that rev. Now you slowly open the clutch until it starts to move then quickly pull the clutch back in. Repeat this procedure a dozen times all while ducking walking the bike. Eventually you learn the friction zone and can eventually open the clutch all the way and ride the bike with the throttle open just enough to keep momentum. The key is keeping the throttle open that quarter turn while you are learning the friction zone. Once you get comfortable letting out the clutch then you can build up to faster speeds and practice shifting and stopping. Always learn where the brake is first!

first - let them rev it in neutral to get the feel for the throttle. Then let them stall it a dozen times to get the feel of the clutch bite point. Then put on a helmet and take them somewhere safe!
