Raytheon is part of backbone of the United States of America's military defense industry. Raytheon makes up a large part of the military industrial complex as the world's 2nd largest defense conglomerate.

But how did Raytheon originally become so successful? What is the military and economic history of this company? What steps did Raytheon take to grow? And what controversies have they weathered.

Task & Purpose is a military news and culture oriented channel. We want to foster discussion about the defense industry.

I find the defense industry fascinating and tried to give a balanced look at some of their successes and included some of Raytheon's controversies towards the end of the video. If you guys like these kind of defense industry historical rundowns let me know and I'll make more, if you don't like them, let me know and I'll knock it off.

My uncle used to work for Hughes Aircraft (California) in the 80s and 90s. Raytheon ended up merging With Hughes Aircraft in 1997. Raytheon is definitely one of the most influential defense contractors that I’ve seen in Iraq and Afghanistan.

There once was a small rubber boot company in a small town in Finland. That rubber boot company later became the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. That small town was called Nokia. Raytheon’s story sounds a bit similar 😅

I worked in Avionics for the Marine Corps from the 1990s until the 2010s on both the old KC-130F/R/T models, and the F/A-18A thru D models. Seen plenty enough aircraft components plastered with Raytheon's name on it. When they say that they don't make the aircraft, just the important parts, they're not kidding.

My father was a nuclear engineer for Raytheon in the 90s and 80s. We escaped communism because he had the balls to walk up to the embassy in 1983 and offer America a deal (in Romania at the time).
- make nuclear arms for USA … or Russia. You pick.
He, along with myself and my mom - were given asylum and protection and helped to escape communism within a week.
He was stationed with Raytheon first as a government sponsored contractor then became full time. Eventually he pivoted to making nuclear waste tunnels that spanned across the country. Worked there till his death in 2002.

My dad was lead engineer for Texas instruments. He d signed the radar system for the F- 16 fighter. After 40 years of service, Ratheon bought out all of Texas instruments defence contracts and they force retired my dad and thousands of knowledgeable engineers.. Three years later my dad got a call from Ratheon saying they could not decipher the F-16 radar schematics my dad designed and they asked my dad if he would consider coming back to work. My dad said he would consult for 100 dollars per hour. Ratheon refused the offer and wanted my dad to drive to work every day for 30 dollars per hour. My dad said my two boys make 30 dollars an hour stuffing mail in mail boxes. Again Ratheon stated they could not decipher the schematics. My dad was a self taught engineer who worked his way to the top as lead engineer. He politely told Ratheon to shove their offer where the sun doesn't shine. A lot of Ratheon technology comes from the buy-out of electronic companies and they subsequently inherit the technological innovations of those companies . Small fact. The micro chip was invented by my dad's good friend at Texas instruments in Richardson Texas.

I used to sell custom made parts to a Raytheon subsidiary. The reason defence is so expensive is so much inefficiency and waste. You have to do so many reports and measurements on what are the simplest parts, the buyers have such poor training that when two young guys took over for the old buyer there I worked with, I had to train them how to procure properly. But the government just keeps cutting checks so the ineffeciency is tolerated.

$5.6 billion on $67 billion turnover is 7.7% EBITDA.
Depending on sector, 8% EBIT, or earnings before interest, tax, depreciation etc Indicates a pretty darn healthy company in my experience, especially one as R&D heavy as a Raytheon.
Plus, your government wouldn’t like them showing much profit would they?!

Really enjoyed this deep dive into a defense contractor. Some of my family are current and former Raytheon employees. I've always heard it's a great company to work for if you're engineering/professional services.

I find the accounting aspect for defense budget quite fascinating… you get to see where pork barrel projects go and where effective spending goes. Keep up the good work!

Raytheon is not just a defense company it's a brand and a lifestyle. These weapons are not just for lend/lease they are a new lease on life the Raytheon Life.

I think that Raytheon is such a brand, that they should make a subsidiary that makes microwave ovens and make a big Raytheon logo on them. They would sell like ice cream in hot summer. "I have a luxury $1000 microwave oven made by Raytheon!"
