As a young man in 1970, I listened to this after losing my girl -and wept.
Now, 53 years later, listening again and looking back on my lost youth -I weep.

If this song is the only thing keeping you alive tonight, please do not give up.

"I've lost the way myself"

I don't know where I'm going, but I'm trying. I hope you don't give up either.

If people can hate for no reason, I can love for no reason.

I love you all.

This is probably their best song and most people have never even heard it.

What is with all the people criticising because someone said they heard a song on a game?

Yeah, sure, I heard this song on the radio long before Mafia 3 was ever a thing. Does that make me somehow better than someone else because they didn't? Just be grateful that the people who heard this on Mafia 3 are being exposed to damn good music and stop acting like a bunch of superior assholes because you heard something before someone else.

love 60s music, but can't believe I'd never heard this until Mafia 3.What a song.

Thanks, Mafia III. This one hits so close to home and I'd probably have never listened to it if not for the game. I literally just stopped playing and began to weep.

didn't know the song before mafia 3 - it came up while I was driving, the sun was getting down over the bayou. couldn't help but pull over watching the sunset and listen to the song to its very end. one of the best moments in my life - virtual and real.

I was a teen when this album first came out in 1968. Most people bought the album for "Born To Be Wild" but I bought it for "Desperation." Such a great song. It's one I never tire of.

Back in june 2014, I was in a bus on route to Pocatello, Idaho...
It was about 5 PM, almost everyone in the bus was sleeping.

I was sitting by myself, and this song started playing...out of nowhere I start crying my eyes out, it took me by surprise. One of my favorite songs of all time for sure ♥️

Lyric:
When rain drops fall and you feel low
Ah, do you ever think it's useless
Do you ever feel like letting go
Do you ever sit and do you wonder
Will the world ever change
And just how long will it take
To have it all rearranged

Tell me why these things are still the same
Tell me why no one can seem to learn from mistakes

Take my hand if you don't know where you're goin'
I'll understand, I've lost the way myself
Oh, don't take that old road it leads to nowhere
We must return before the clock strikes twelve

It's so easy to do nothin'
When you're busy night and day
Take a step in one direction
And take a step the other way
So don't quit tryin' when you stumble
Don't give up should you fall
Keep on searchin' for the passway
That will lead you through the wall
Don't look back or you'll be left behind
Don't look back or you will never find peace of mind

(2)
Take my hand if you don't know where you're goin'
I'll understand, I've lost the way myself
Oh, don't take that old road it leads to nowhere
We must return before the clock strikes twelve

I was born in the 80s. Heard this song in a video game and now I listen to it almost daily. The lyrics, the voice…bring tears to my eyes

I was so glad when I heard this Steppenwolf song on Mafia III... Everybody knows their overplayed singles Magic Carpet Ride and Born to be Wild, but Steppenwolf were so much more than those two songs, such an underrated band.

John Kay's song writing is just so prophetic, thought provoking, and all around brilliant.

The perfect tune for alienated youth in the mid-1960's. We all dreamed away to this album. It changed our lives . . . -- --

This is a fantastic song. I fell in love with it after hearing the Humble Pie version back in highschool, so that's the one I'm most familiar with.

I was 19 years old when this album came out. Such fantastic blues in this song. When I hear it I float away.

Wonderful song. Humble Pie did a superb cover of it, as well.
