I like that Phillip's dog is trying to help.

I love paintings as much as the next person, but my goodness, are those English country houses stunning! From the ornamental details of the architecture, to the tasteful and luxurious decor, to the sprawling gardens that surround each property... I thoroughly envy those aristocrats who were lucky enough to grow up on such beautiful estates.

Fascinating. One thing I expected but missed was mention of Maria Cosway and Thomas Jefferson, who fell madly in love with her when he was in Paris as ambassador of the pre-constitutional American government. He wrote a famous letter to her in the form of a debate between his head and his heart.

I love stumbling across my new favourite paintings through this series. The portrait featured here was arresting and captivating from the very start. It's no wonder Phillip was drawn to it. The pose is very natural and the sideways look makes it look very contemporary, timeless, even. I think I prefer this over his later portraits which, although more refined in technique, doesn't quite possess the same level of charm. Thank you so much for bringing us this episode!

Fascinating program. Completely captivated by the family story, forensic investigation and most of all a part of British society history.

Cosway has featured large in several documentaries, and perhaps this exposure has brought her some notoriety. Some of her work has fetched more than stated here, for female artists have come into the light of the world only recently.

Fantastic portrait. The quality of Lawrence's paintings far exceeds that of Cosway in finesse. It would have surprised me immensely if the conclusion would have been that it was Cosway, to me it clearly looked like Lawrence's work from the start. Well spotted by Philip.

As a painter who has a bad habit of cleaning the brush by wiping it on the background area knowing it's going to be painted over, I felt called out by the x-ray results. lol
But I do rather like that I share a bad habit with a legendary painter like Lawrence!

So glad I watched this episode, I always loved that portrait of Georgiana as Diana the huntress. Never knew it was done by a female artist that Georgiana was a patron of!💕

This program is wonderful. I love the family’s input, especially Hugh’s dry humor in this one. “I’m gobsmacked.” I would have worried being gobsmacked in his state of health might have done him in. So glad he was present to give his history on the painting, the family history of the subject (wastrel), & learn its new attribution. Thank you for posting.

I m no expert, but from the first minutes I could tell it was a Lawrence: The way he drew his portraits and the choice of the sky colorings is different from Cosway's. She painted her portraits in 2D, while he painted his in 3D, in such a way you could feel the character can even step out of the portrait.

n.h.k.
