Used to live in New Orleans, saw this all the time.

Sometimes, cars in Los Angeles don’t have license plates because they’re new and drivers are waiting for the official plates to arrive. Other times, people might remove them to avoid getting tickets from traffic cameras, but that’s against the law and can get them into trouble. 🚗🚔

Since Karen Bass took office, Los Angeles has experienced its highest crime rates in history. I left LA in 2023. In the summer of 2022, I was on hold with 911 while a homeless person attempted to break in during broad daylight, and it took them four hours to respond. LA has really gone downhill.

There’s also people who bought used cars and can’t afford or get the check engine light to turn off therefore only able to get temporary license plates until they stop letting you get them

This has been happening in my country for years. So much so, that the community patrol hold annual plate screw swaps. The screws they change to are unable to be removed without their specific tool, the amount of number plates that go missing is insane.

Theres also a loophole allowing people not to put plates on until their vehicle as long as it’s within the first six months of its life, allowing you to drive without plates as long as you keep leasing new cars every six months. Steve jobs did this. California loophole

If you buy a used car in CA it is not required to get plates until 6 months have passed so that is the actual reason. I’m sure criminals drive without plates as well but that happens in every other state.

In places with toll roads like Florida and New York it’s also common to bend license plates so tool transponder cameras can’t read them so you don’t get a bill in the mail

There are other reasons but the more interesting one to talk about is actually the temporary plates as I've seen dozens of older pre-2000s and even pre 1980s cars with temporary plates or even some temporary plates that say they expire in several years with the worse I've seen being a plate that expires in 2035.
