Is Georges Bataille's Philosophy the Key to a Better Life?

This video explores the provocative thoughts of Georges Bataille, a philosopher who challenged social conventions by questioning the concept of existence through themes such as waste, sacrifice, and transgression. Through his works, Bataille unveiled the tension between desire and prohibition, encouraging reflection on the true nature of human existence. Today, his extreme vision of life continues to influence contemporary thought.

For many years I have been fascinated by an incisive line I read in a poem: “even the ways we miss our lives are also our lives.” You can’t waste life, you can only live it.

My life has been a waste so I guess I should feel good about myself after all.

His analysis of how surplus is used is on the mark and perhaps the most interesting idea among what is being looked at here. It is also saddening but not surprising that the surplus is currently being squandered on weapons of mass destruction. We live in a time when most people do not want to be involved in the military and recruitment numbers are falling, and when most people either don't care about China or Russia or Zionist Isreal or have favourable opinions of the first two and negative ones towards the last. Having lived through both world wars Bataille saw the inherent genocidal nature of the ruling class and their politicians made manifest and it seems the surplus is going to be used for a bigger and better war, at least from the plutocrats' point of view. I'll have to look into Bataille, though I imagine I won't be particularly impressed given his proclivity for excess. I'm a bit of an aesthete.

Interesting. I knew nothing of him. Much of value in his work, so it seems.

Thanks for this. |I didn't know much about Bataille before, now I want to read some of his work. Reminded me of the Kevin Ayers quote, "“You can’t shine if you don’t burn.”

I have never studied his works or heard of him. This should be interesting.

If you do what you love you don’t wait a day in your life. I think that if you truly live what you do you can not by definition be productive because no matter the goals you surrender yourself to a process. Productivity is a profit oriented term

Ah, Bataille, where were you when I was drinking?

Let's be serious. Only one man of a thousand would dare to live in the way he offered.

i found Bataille's thinking profoundly egoist. It is said that world wars affected his thought. It is difficult see how. After all the suffering of the wars he says: Evil is the moment of freedom. Ask the victims what they think

All of us are trying to understand our “purpose” if there is one. In the absence of actual communication with other entities, I do not accept the so called written works as the word of God, we must use our best judgement to live our lives in a way commensurate with nature. Goodwill to our fellow humans does seem to be the best course of action. There is evidence for possible other worlds or dimensions due to NDE’s and personal experiences. Much is unknown. If we actually knew what are ultimate purpose was as humans we wouldn’t act truly anymore. We would follow the course laid out by those instructions. Becoming robots. Therefore, we must remain in the dark when it comes to knowing all.

This philosophy reminds me of the Rubaiyat by Omar Khayyam.

I don't like the background flecks. I'm not only capable of but prefer to view images that do not flicker and pullulate. I averted my eyes and just listened, even though I already know about Bataille, having once sat and read the pages of an unflickering book.

I do not see anything wise or correct in his philosophy. I know the true meaning of life. It is to lead as good, enjoyable and productive life as possible. This life is but a short test. our real life is in the spirit world (what religion calls heaven). when the body dies our spirit returns to the spirit world with all our personality and memories (many near death experiences prove this) When we travel through the light to reach the spirit world (accessible to all, regardless of belief) we are judged on the goodness of our life here. Those not good enough are reborn, i, e. the majority. Those good enough enjoy love and God for eternity. Hell or the devil do not exit. Those deserving hell are eliminated. purgatory however does exist. All our transgressions are punished, there is no forgiveness other than to be reborn to try again.
