I’m an electrician and the reason they go on sale is the same as clothes, outdated design

Because the retail markup is very large. Plus lighting is often a fashon so gets old, and the tech is improving.

D27 Buyers have the most markdown dollars within the company. Products are high margin but have a little more setup for each time a light is clearanced out. Lighting resets are the best time to look.

The dust on the boxes explain why. Lighting is a good place to find penny items as well.

The clearance in the light cloud will usually stay in the light cloud because it's too big to put on the end cap and there's usually too much

In retail if a product is not paying for the shelf space it's taking it has to go quickly. Products that go out of fashion quickly get the biggest discounts.

My theory is lighting is a very high margin item and to make things even better for home depot, many of the lights sold there are their in house brands. lets use a led pendant as an example the cost to manufacture is 10 dollars its sold for 90 and cleared for 15. They set the price from manufacturer to end consumer thereby having the most room to discount.

That because all that no name lighting is retailed at enormous markups. When it doesn't sell is goes to the huge mark down which is really the price it should have been to start with.

Also go to the back of the store and walk the entire back wall the have way more clearance items you never see

Most likely depends on your location, I do property management for a large area of the state i live in and i never see clearance lighting and i go to the nearest home depot a minimum of five times a day. If i had to guess though id say its because lighting is a very common fix/upgrade, a lot of the lighting these days cant be repaired because they're building LED into the fixtures, so if you have a light go bad you would have to buy a whole new fixture, and if they dont sell that fixture anymore you are stuck either mismatching or having to buy more to match

It’s because they’re such a great price markup when a new design comes out they can just offload that stuff

because lighting is nothing than flimsy sheet metal with thin wires that are too short made to look like something special. i wouldn’t want most of them if they were free

Often its because they get so many defects they just dump the prices.

It's due to lightning being a design feature and just like anything else based upon looks it comes and goes. And when it goes manufacturers stop making that particular design and stores drop the price to get rid of it to make room for newer designs. Something similar to holiday stuff being marked down after the holiday is over.

Lighting fixtures go out of style faster than most other items stocked in the store so thats why they're marked down constantly

adamhunter

Light fixtures don’t often need replaced. They are extremely overpriced. There’s a computer program that says “hey this stock has been on the shelf too long”. Then it goes on clearance. It costs money to keep stock for long periods of time. It doesn’t really cost but it’s not turning a profit quickly enough.

The most likely explanation is that the sales margins are the highest. They’re cheap to make and ship from overseas and markup is huge.

I’m not an insider though.

Those items get discontinued that's why . Out with old in with new
