Could Velociraptors Thrive in Today's Ecosystem?
Velociraptors belonged to a family of dinosaurs called the dromaeosaurids. Their name means ‘speedy thief’. They were feathered and relatively small dinosaurs that walked on two legs. They lived in Asia during the Late Cretaceous period around 70 million years ago. But like all the non-avian dinosaurs, they became extinct at the Cretaceous–Paleogene boundary 66 million years ago. Here, we ask the question could velociraptors survive nowadays?
They weighed between 15 and 20 kilograms, 33 to 44 pounds and grew up to 2 metres, 6.5 feet long. It was considerably smaller than those portrayed in the film Jurassic Park. But this by no means that it was any less fierce. Velociraptor had many advantages that made it an iconic predator of the late Cretaceous, but could it survive today?
