Digital smart labels hitting store shelves

Digital pricing labels are already popular in Europe, but are starting to appear on store shelves here in the GTA. Videographer Audra Brown with how the technology lets companies automate their labelling, pricing and product information in real time

It's great for stores because they can cut their staff. It's great for stores because they can more easily raise prices. It's great for stores because they can change them on a whim so you can't point to it to say the price at the register is wrong (and they'll ignore the photo you took). It's great for customers because they'll have less money cluttering up their lives.

After the recent cyber attack on Rogers Where all communication with cut off including Internet payment systems, interact, etc. Wait till somebody hacks into this system! well, let’s see what happens.

I'm bothered by the claim that there is an environmental upside to these. I get that the same unit can be used for several years, but at the end of their lifecycle they are ewaste. A paper label can only be used once, but we know how to recycle paper. So - this is green washing plain and simple. On the upside for the consumer - which I've rarely seen mentioned - these are a lot easier to read than a paper label. And on the downside, some models contribute to surveillance capitalism, as they can track bluetooth devices carried by consumers.
