US says attempts to re-anchor aid pier in Gaza were unsuccessful

The US has announced that the pier, installed to increase the flow of aid into the Gaza Strip, will "soon cease operations," less than two months after its installation.
The pier, constructed to deliver much-needed humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, has been operational for only 23 of the 53 days since its anchoring.
Sabrina Singh, the Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary, said that the US military’s attempts to re-anchor the temporary aid pier on the Gaza coast were unsuccessful.
The pier's effectiveness has been hindered by adverse weather conditions and concerns over the safety of aid workers distributing humanitarian relief.
The structure, which rises and falls with the waves, has been relocated to Ashdod three times due to rough seas, most recently on 28 June.
Last month, the World Food Programme (WFP) suspended its delivery of aid via the maritime corridor after an Israeli operation in the Nuseirat refugee camp, aimed at freeing four Israeli captives, resulted in the deaths of 270 Palestinians.
Videos showing a helicopter leaving the US-built pier have raised concerns over its potential use in the attack, an allegation that Washington has denied.
