UN Security Council demands immediate Gaza ceasefire as US abstains

The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza - after months of failed attempts.

Nearly six months of Israel's war on Gaza has left more than 32,300 Palestinians dead.

The resolution calls for a ceasefire for the remainder of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which ends in two weeks time.

It also demands the unconditional release of all captives held in Gaza.

Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo reports from the UN headquarters, in New York.

😮😮😮😮😮😮😮If im Hamas i wouldn't follow the UN resolution because it only calls for a two week ceasefire but they have to release all the Hostages. The US actually pulled a great deal for Israel . I knew it was fishy that the US would allow a UN resolution that would hurt Israel 😂😂😂😂😮😮

It is a fact that the resolution has a legal standing. It is a fact that it is a resolution under Chapter 6 which is non-binding and therefore not enforcable (or at the min this is an opinion held by many and therefore at min legally in a grey zone). Finally it requires Hamas to release hostages and asks Israel to ceasefire till end of Ramadan (basically 2 weeks). And in all this who should do their part first will be a which comes first - :'the chicken or the egg' Frankly it looks like so much effort by so many for possibly little to nothing to come out of it is disappointing.
