I drove by here yesterday and didn't know what it was ! It was so interesting to see, I slowed right down, it's riddled with graffiti, but such an interesting structure, it's all boarded off, and you can't enter but from the outside .... it's in the middle of nowhere

I was born and raised in Bowmanville. The local recreation department used the pool for our swimming lessons. I gained my RLSS bronze and silver medals in that pool in the early 1960s.

A lot of former prisoners emigrated to Canada after the war because of the devastation in Germany. One of the families in my neighborhood in 1961 had just moved from Canada where they lived for nine years waiting to get into the States. The father had been in Hitler youth and became a fighter pilot until shot down & captured by the British. As much as he enjoyed the US & Canada the entire family went back to Germany in 1974 when the father had saved enough to start his own business.

The Canadians were wise to allow the German POWs to see the many miles of farmland and industrial centers when the POWs traveled to their camps. They found that it was not profitable to escape - neither in the U.S. nor Canada. I ahve had some exposure to POW camps both in New York and in Colorado. Most of these POWs became much better human beings after their prison experience.

My Father was a guard of German POWs at Ft Lewis, Washington. I had hope to travel there and visit the museum there, but my plans were stopped by this COVID crap!

The POW camps in the US and Canada ate better than than the citizens of the countries. In Phoenix there were many thousands German and Italians, the Italians loved the sun enjoyed the meals as did the Germans but many Germans tried tried to escape. They did farming, grew food for their own use as well as to sell. It was certainly wonderful conditions compared to the Nazi treatment of Allied prisoners

It is too bad that the Federal Government doesn't make this a National Historic Site and put money into restoration. It would make a great WWII museum, something like Bletchley Park in the UK.
I have lived in the area for 20 some years and knew it when it was still a private school and I cannot believe how quickly the site fell into ruin after the last owners abandoned it.

Although the Germans were enemy combatants, those that chose to stay in Canada or return to Canada quickly fit in to Canadian culture, because  German values are similar to values of Canadians.  The same can't be said for the current wave of migrants,   In fact I believe the main reason the government is bringing in people is to shore up the economy, by printing money so the real estate bubble will continue.
