Of course the comments would be full of the "Doge" meme. :D

That being said, love Venice, totally have to visit there someday.

Touring that prison shook me up. Bad energy. A lot of suffering happened there.

Reading Roger Crowley, this video puts color to his wonderful books about Venice and trading. Thanks. Rob (like #400). A nice video.

Not only was the Doge man's best friend, he was also very rich, entrepreneurial genius.

It'd be a good idea to check out Daron Acemoglu's book Why Nations Fail because he cites Venice as an example. In its early days, it had policies that encouraged banks to finance trade expeditions for the rich and middle class alike. But later on, these rules changed due to infighting in the city. Eventually only the rich families were able to get enough money together to arrange the expeditions and Venice was on the decline.

I wonder if Rick Steves knows about the doge meme.

such dynasties never died out they simply built bigger castles all over the world, they are the true power brokers of this world and will stop at nothing to hold on to it

Venice's main claim to fame was its innovative banking sector. Doges were elected by the aristocrats in the city much like they were in Florence and other Italian cities - to make the city and its residents richer.
