How Perception Influences Others’ Behavior Toward You

Ask yourself these five questions to examine how others’ perceptions of you influence their behavior:

• What is the image you project?

• What are the opinions you share, and how are they received by others?

• What is the attitude you convey?

• What is the impression you make on others?

• What is the reputation you have?

Others’ perceptions of you influence your career success. Working to understand the concrete behaviors and attitudes you’re conveying to others will help you visualize their image of you. Once you know what that image is, you can work to shift it. You'll learn how perception influences behavior.

To begin understanding their perceptions of you, reflect on those five questions and then use them to survey others about how they perceive you. Ask them for feedback in all of these five areas. Make sure to seek out input from a broad range of people—from at least several subordinates, several coworkers, and several superiors.

It’s easier to define the image others project. You might have an obnoxious, long-winded coworker in mind whom you could easily characterize. But what about yourself? That is much harder to define, partly because we don’t observe ourselves in the same way that we observe others, and partly because it can feel threatening to dig into these questions. But you need to know what that image is in order to change it for the better.

When you answer these key questions, you’ll have a much stronger idea of how you’re perceived in your organization—and how these perceptions influence others’ behavior toward you.
