Private investments in India are 'far more important' than consumption, says investment firm

You look at the past returns of Long Term Debt Funds.
Which sane person would invest in these funds when there is no certainty of returns and payback and when one can get much higher returns in equity and same or even higher returns in shorter duration FDs or medium term govt. schemes??!!!

Please tell me if there is some other way of investing my savings in the private sector.
