In this lesson we will be learning #9 - Blues Fills and Turns Part 1 (No Bull Piano).

April is Jazz Appreciation Month, and to celebrate I'm giving away 30 days of free jazz piano lessons to all my followers on YouTube.

Jazz piano can be learned by anyone, and No Bull Piano makes it easier to learn how to improvise, improve chord voicings, comp chords and play like a jazz musician.

The step-by-step lessons in my No Bull Piano™ course make it easier to learn jazz piano...even if you have never improvised before!

For the month of April, all No Bull Guide to Jazz Piano™ lessons are free to watch.

Great video, be a few days of practice to get this movement I think, my fingers are slow.

(The turn takes up a DAH in the vocalization method right? I think I get the rhythm but I find myself sometimes automatically making that Bb on the second beat (fifth note on the staff)a DA. I think because I held that last note of the turn a little, and usually holding the note like that I'm using the DEE-BA vocalization you know? It's ingrained in me now and automatic. So it goes something like TRIPLET-DEE-BA-DEE-BA which is wrong. The turn I don't vocalise as TRIPLET-DEE as it's too fast to really vocalise, I'm just sorta doing the whole sound as an UNGH or TURN whatever, it's own thing, but hopefully that explains what I find happening sometimes. Not a big thing, if I concentrate I can get it, I think just practising the full rhythm a lot will do it, i.e the correct way TURN/DEE-BA/DA but still, I found it interesting, maybe be a common issue? Definitely helping me a lot with the rhythm stuff though, breaking through these little barriers.)

Do turns always cycle around the center note also? eg if you played just a sequence of descending notes in the same rhythm would this just be called fill as opposed to a turn? I noticed it's nice and easy to descend in a fast rhythm like that if you slide off a black note to start, sounds quite nice, doesn't work with a turn though if you cycle back to the center note.

Playing by ear, the video is still very helpful, but I wish I could understand sheet music 😖
